it is very sad, but i do wish the family had decided to allow her organs to be donated. a braindead patient with a beating heart is uncommon as well as ideal for donation. her life would have helped many others, and the publicity due to her celebrity would have furthered the cause.

Yes but when people are in shock they don't think very clear.
I like to know why the family flew her over to N.Y. to another hospital. Yeah I'm sure it was to a outstanding hospital but she was in Montreal, surely they have great hospitals there as well. That ordeal of jetting her over to N.Y. must have been a strain on her body. The family should have just let her rest and the Canadian doctors look after her....they could not have done any worst for her.

indeed. that is why it's so important to discuss the decision to donate with family, so that they don't have to make the decision.
i wondered about the hospital transfer myself. maybe it was already hopeless when she was being transferred, but just done so it was easier for family to visit before she passed?

How is it even possible to die from a fall on the bunny hill?

We don't know the details and maybe never will. Here is two GUESSES on my part.
1, yes it was hopeless, she was already brain dead.
2. The doctors in Montreal wanted to do brain surgery but warn she may suffer some brain damage as a result and the family wanted the surgery done in N.Y.
My guess is the fall cause her brain to bleed and swell and the only option was to drill-cut the skull to relive pressure. I would like to know what the family allowed the doctors to do in Montreal.
This is a good place to bring up "living wills" what steps you would like the doctors to do to save your life. If the doctors could save your life but you might become mentally retarded would that be OK?
Guess what, I have a nice detail will but no living will... not too many have one. Most times people wait until they are 60-70 years old before making out a living will.

that is exactly what i think happened, too. specifically, i think it may have been a subdural hematoma. they are not uncommon, and the symptoms fit hers very well. here's a good explanation if anyone's interested http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Subdural_haematoma
this is a great place to bring up having a living will! every adult ought to have one, not just older people. end-of-life care should be discussed with any family member who may have a hand in determining your care.
i have a living will, although it is rudimentary it will suffice for now until i can afford to pay a lawyer in the future for a "real" one. i found it online, offered free by an insurance company i believe. anyone can and should do it.
