Re: Bacon Village

Yeah they are quite wine-dy. The A9 isn't *too* bad the further on you get, although it is still classed as the most dangerous road in Scotland. hmm

The other night there was something on TV and they said "Dusseldorf" and me and my dad both said "Dusseldorf?" the way Mary in Where Eagles Dare says it and it made me think of you over there in Germanyland, even though you're not in Dusseldorf. Have you been there and if so can you tell me what side of the square the cathedral is on?

If you haven't seen Where Eagles Dare, then shame on you, and also that whole paragraph above won't be as funny and it doesn't matter.

Re: Bacon Village

My dad was in Germany in the Army, and he was just saying yesterday that he was upset that he didn't take that many pictures over there.   Since it was only like 20 years after WWII there was still a lot of things from it over there, and he just wishes he had taken pictures of it.  Like their barracks still had Nazi signs on it, since it was just a refurbished Nazi base.  And he went to the base that Elvis was at, and it was funny because it didn't really mean that much back then because Elvis was still alive. tongue

Re: Bacon Village

I've never been car sick. I got told off once on a school trip for reading a magazine and refusing to put it away. Apparently I would be sick. I think I know myself a little better than you do thank you.
I'm only ever sick if I'm ill or hungover. smile

I was looking at cheap one way flight to New York incase I ever felt like running away to New York one day. The cheapest ones went from Heathrow to Dusselldorf and then to JFK. Why would you want to fly East then have to fly back over England?

I want to go to see some of the Nazi camps. I'd like to go to Auschwitz.
I bet it was really interesting seeing all that old stuff. I once went to this place where they had build a replica of a London street during the Blitz. I thought it was well cool! ahaha Went to these cool places on a school trip once where they were working victorian villages. Love those sorts of things. Was called Blist Hill I think. There was another one but I forgot that one.
Such a history geek.

Re: Bacon Village

aww I want to go to a working Victorian village.

I think we have places here that are like Pilgrim places, and Rendezvous that people dress up like the French Trading time.  I have been to one of those for a field trip and people sell their wares and throw axes and stuff.  Oh and then there is the Renascence fair.  That's always fun to go to. http://www.renaissancefest.com/MRF/info.html

I think it would be really fun to work at a place like that. Getting to dress up everyday and pretenent it's the 1800's!

Re: Bacon Village

I haven't been to Düsseldorf and I haven't see Where Eagles Dare. Sorry!

My mum lived in Germany in the 50s because HER dad was in the Army and I have seen pics but no Nazi stuff or anything like that. Actually she and I visited one of the towns she used to live in a few years ago and we recreated a couple of her old photos eg. outside her old house.

She also lived in Libya, now THAT would be interesting to visit. To go to Leptis Magna and see if I can find the same stuff as is in her old pictures. And then think about how 60+ years is not even that impressive compared to 1600+.

One of my mates is in Poland right now and just went to Auschwitz yesterday. I know quite a few people who have been there, but it doesn't really appeal to me. I visited a concentration camp when I came to Germany with school. And there are memorials all over town so I can get sad about the Holocaust etc any time I want...

I do like other less depressing bits of history though. I love those old working Victorian places and such. I've not been to Blists Hill although I have been to Ironbridge. I've been to the Black Country Museum, I loved that place when I was a kid. Except for the school cos I was terrified of the schoolmistress.

Did you guys have people visit your school dressed up and stuff as well? And also dress up yourselves for special history days? I always loved that. We had a Victorian day, a Tudor day and a 1940s day.

Re: Bacon Village

Ahhh the Black Country Museum! Thats the other one I went to. It was on a trip to Iron bridge when I was 13. Were were learning about the industrial revolution.

The only time we did a dress up thing was where the whole school had street parties like the ones they had on V.E. day. It was so cool we spent a a week or two building up to it. We learnt square dancing and the songs they used to sing. We had spam sandwiches at the party!
Was one of the best days of school. Actually probably the best!

Re: Bacon Village

I thought it might have been the one, haha.

Our days were awesome. Tudor Day was great because we had a Tudor feast. We all brought in different food that at least slightly resembled what the Tudors might have eaten. I totally stuffed myself on cocktail sausages along with sugared petals and way too much ginger ale. Also I got to wear my absolute favourite outfit - my dad's Civil War reenactment costume. He used to play a Cavalier cannoneer at battles. Civil war was obviously a few decades later, so my mum altered the jacket a little bit. It was then really short, and I was wearing nothing but tights underneath. Showing everyone my arse the entire day basically. This would have been much better if I was older - say 18 instead of 8 lol

Victorian Day I wore some long skirt and a blouse of my Mum's. (When I was a kid all mums had stuff like that. If I had a kid now, they would be screwed if they needed to borrow that type of thing from me.) We all sat with our desks in rows instead of the usual way, and we had pens and pots of ink, and wrote out sums of pounds, shillings and pence. Also especially for the day, I learnt the names of all the Bible books in order and recited them in front of the class, (I'm not certain why - it seemed like a Victorian thing to do?!) My teacher was very impressed. Then we had a baking demonstration from some people who tour schools to do that sort of thing. They were all dressed up in Victorian clothes too and they showed us how to make bread, butter and jam and then we all got to eat some and it was delicious.

We also had other themed days, like a Carribbean day when we were studying St Lucia (in which we made fruity cocktails and did limbo dancing) and a French day (in which we got to try snails, among other French things!)

I've always thought my school was a bit shit, I guess maybe it wasn't after all!

Re: Bacon Village

Oh your primary school sounded amazing.
Only fun things we did other than the VE day was a Golden Jubilee, we had big parties and everyone in the school was each given a balloon with a piece of paper which had our school address and maybe our names and with the hopes that we could find out how far our balloons got. That was fun. I had to learn the national anthem too, Forgot it now though.
We also had Police week where local police came in for a week and we pretended to be police. Had to learn that alphabet, alpha, bravo, charlie thing and recite it in front of the class. And did crime scene things on the computer. It was quite fun actually.

Re: Bacon Village

Aww your guys schools sound awesome.  We never did anything.  I mean there would be people that came in but not dressed up people, but like people that would explain how dairy farms work and stuff.  Then there was a person that taught us Rosemaling.  And we would dress up on Halloween and do costume parades.

Then in the 7th grade we had to do speeches dressed up as people that they were about.  And I was Pocahontas and Helen of Troy.

In High School we had one of the Van Trapps visit us.  That was great, she was cutest lady ever.  We had spam too at school whenever we had a football game against the team from Austen, MN where it is made.  They would fry it up on the second floor, and it would smell up the whole place.

I got my BooBoo today! He's so cuuute! I'll take photos for you tongue

At my primary school, we did a Millennium Concert where we told the town's history of the past 1000 years in short plays and skits. I was a Viking, a Victorian and a football fan. I still have the video of it!

Re: Bacon Village

Aww you cute young people. I was already in high school by 2000.

But when I was in the top year at primary school we did a play reflecting on our school's 30 year history, which was 1968-98. I played a teacher in four sketches - one for each decade - and sang in the choir on several songs AND played the flute for another one. It was a bit epic. My mum has the video of that as well. I haven't watched it in a few years. My ex used to request to watch it all the time when he was at my house, haha, but Pete has never seen it, thank god (Although it saddens me slightly that he is not at least curious - he knows of its existence.)

I had to look up Rosemaling, but my mum has a wooden box with that type of design on, I must ask her where she got it.

Shiloh you watch Rugby today? The ref was a ******. Although I was supporting Wales I felt sorry for Hogg and his try being disallowed. Bless him first game, he gets a try and the ref wont allow it. He was a good player. Speedy!

Oh I meant to tell you guys.  I went to a social-ice thing that everything was made out of ice.  I got a martini in an ice glass.  But they had bacon infused vodka and bacon infused bloody marys but I didn't try any.

You don't make sense.  Your input is unnecessary. Go away.

That's cool! I'd be happy with just a bacon sandwich or something. I didn't get anything though I bought my dog a coat. And myself shoes, a pattern for a skirt and hair dye. In going to go brown... Im scared! Haha! Been blonde since I was 15.
