Someone started a post not too long ago wishing Muslims a happy Eid. It was really appreciated. I realized while reading everyones posts that many people don't know a lot about Muslims/ Islam.
I want to possibly open up some dialogue.
If you have a question please ask. If you think its silly, ask. Others may have the same Question as you.
If you dont feel comfy asking on here, feel free to send me a pm.
Oh and for the few on here who might want to leave ignorant comments
take it somewhere else.
This is a peaceful discussion, it's not meant to start a religious arguments.
Thanks

Urm, everything?
I didnt listen in RE at all.
I would like to know about the terrorism thing because you are a peaceful religious group (from what i remember in RE)
Offline

Can you be more specific?
Terrorism is not a part of Islam at all.
Some people believe in a distorted version of Islam. It's not even based upon religious context.
Much of it is cultural, political, and or personal reasons.

I didnt mean to offend you.
I meant about extremism. Is it particuarly common?
Offline

oh, no I'm not offended honest.
sorry if I came off that way.
You know its the typing, sometimes it seems worse than its meant too.
It's not common with anyone I know.
I know no one who even thinks like that.
Majority of my friends love this country ( usa).
I doubt I could live anywhere else in the world and run my mouth the way I do

I'l ask about that too.
The veil that covers you all over apart from your eyes, is that a religious law or is it a taliban law (sorry again if that offends, i seem to remember that from somewhere too)
and sorry again about that offendedness thing, i know some people can take things to heart, especially about religion. I should think before i type. lol

Eid is our holiday.
More specifically we have 2 Eids.
Eid Al Fitr and Eid Al-Adha
Eid al fitr is a celebration the day after the month of Ramadan. Its a day of feasting and traditionally you give out presents. People give presents for both Eids, like Christians and Jews do for Christmas, and Hannukah(sp?).
Eid Al-adha is in celebration of Prophet Ibrahim's(peace be upon him) obedience to God. The Quran teaches us a story similar to the one in the bible, and Torah.
Allah tested Ibrahim, and told him to kill his son Ishmael, he was going to kill him and Allah put a ram in the place of his son.
People also make Hajj during Eid AlAdha
Its a celebration of Sacrifice.

how do you wrap a sari and how long does it take and is it hard to go to the bathroom with it on? or is it a burka that you wear? in any event the same questions apply, i guess.

Dont worry
. It's obvious your question is serious, and is not meant in a mocking or rude way,so as long as its respectful I'm fine
. I wear the veil that covers everything but my eyes, most of the time. I take it off at work. I will go back to wearing it full time soon. The taliban was very oppressive and did force women to cover.
Forcing someone to cover is NOT Islamic. It's about choice. Just like you cant force someone into marriage.
The Quran and Hadith(our two main sources of knowledge) tells us to cover. The Hadith is basically traditions and sayings of the prophet Muhammad. It goes into much further detail of what you should be doing. Muslim women should cover everything but their hands and face, after they reach puberty.
Its a spiritual thing. It doesnt come natural or easy for everyone. Some women wear it much later than others.

I think you can google how to wrap a sari( i'm not being rude or sarcastic), I dont know how to explain it. I'm not from there.
I wear a niqab which is similar to the burkah. I can go to the bathroom with it on, its not necessary. I dont wear a Sari. I wear an Abaya, which is pretty much a dress. It's an overgarment worn over clothes. So under my abaya I wear stuff like jeans and a tshirt.

what did your wedding dress look like, and also what was your wedding celebration like?

There are loads of different ways to wrap a sari, different styles etc, but basically it's just wrapped around your waist and thrown over the shoulder.
Sorry for the threadjack, MsPrettyPanties.

Ooh i just thought to mention, sari is worn mostly in India since its one of their traditional dress i tihnk.. The sari is not a muslim dress, meaning it did not really come form the religion, rather its associated with the Indian culture
Edited, just wanted to ask you dawn, umm what do you mean by being it hard to go to the bathroom with the burgaa on??

I wore a saree once. If you tuck it in properly and tightly then it shouldn't fall off - ever- but for the first few times it feels like it might at the teensiest tug! It won't though...that's just because you're not used to wearing it the first few times...for like everyone. And yes you can go to the toilet wearing it, just lift it lol. There's not really much chance of it er getting dirty.
