The FDA approval of the drug was pretty much based on political forces, the Pentagon once cited it's potential as a biological weapon, it's traced to tumors, migraines, over eating and most studies which report it's safety are funded by industries which benefit economically from it's use.
I've never been a big fan, the after taste is unpleasant. I'm just wondering if any one uses it? I use to drink a lot of diet coke until bf introduced me to coke zero which uses splenda I think. I really like Splenda but reports have come out recently condemning that too grrr.
(If you want citations on any of my claims just ask, please don't assume I don't have em. )

The only times I've use artificial sweeteners in smoothies - and only because they sweeten a lot with a little amount.
I've heard that most sweeteners have bad health effects as well, but for the life of me I can't remember where.

Aspartame gives me a headache so I don't use it ever. If I drink pop it is always the full sugar variety. Splenda (sucralose) doesn't seem to bother me much, but I don't like how it tastes.

The history of the drug being approved for food usage is pretty interesting. When Donald Rumfeld pops up as a CEO pushing an additive, it's a bad sign imo lol
I'm more of a salt craver than sugar, I can't stand corn syrup in soft drinks because of the after taste so I always favored Diet Coke. Just found out recently from bf it was full of aspartame so switched to coke zero which is probably Equally (ha, pun) as dangerous.

I used to use Sweet n Low in my iced tea, but it started causing me to have migraines. I find that now I have to be careful with all types of sugar and not eat too much.

I've been drinking diet sodas ever since I went on Jenny Craig. I can't afford to be on it, anymore. But, I haven't gotten out of the habit of feeling guilty if I drink regular sodas when diets are an option.

I am diabetic, so it is natural sugars(found in almost all foods and drinks), splenda, or other artificial sweeteners, I know that artificial sweeteners are bad for me, but we all are going to die someday so why not enjoy life while I can.

OMGoodness, it was, Michelle.
I never knew though. Always discarded it just for taste factors. I have been doing research and I'm starting to believe my grandmother was a genius. She never allowed anything in her home with aspartame, Yellow Number 5 or Red Number 2 (2 I think, but maybe it was 10?)

If I'm going to die, which yea I am, I would rather do it when I'm old and as healthy as I can possibly be.

well we know what natural suger does to you so should life to be fairly old if you eat it.. I sure don't ant to live forever that would horrible...

I'm diabetic too so I do use sweeteners in tea and coffee. Plus there's my diet coke addiction.....
There's so much stuff that I cant eat or have to be careful with, that I'm not worried about a little bit of aspartame. I do try to avoid artificial colours in food though, especially Ollie's food. Those E numbers are the ones to watch out for.....

You should check out stevia.... it's a sweet herb.
The sugar lobby tries hard that stevia is not legal in a lot of countries, but for example Japan uses it a lot instead of artificial sweeteners.

Not since i started working where i do now, one of the glaze lads made me taste the amount you get when you lick the tip of your finger and dunk it. Never again it was so sweet it made my gums itch and i couldnt get rid of the taste for hours. I finally managed to shift it with marmite.

Yea, I've heard of stevia. The politics around that are a lot like the ones around the miracle fruit. Sugar lobby and artificial sweeter industry blocked FDA approval.

i'm not a high taster so i don't mind aspartame or the others. though i tend to use splenda because i've heard it's better for you, but realistically, anything fake is not as good as the real stuff. fake sugar included.
i would use real sugar in my tea but for two things. 1. it doesn't dissolve as well and i hate that super sweet last sip. and 2. i tend to drink tea hours at a time (and sometimes fall asleep without brushing then) and do not want real sugar on my teeth that whole time.

I never could tell the difference between Equal and Splenda...
So, I guess the conclusion is just take natural sugar?
What exactly is the stevia?

In Austria (I think in the whole EU) it is not allowed to be sold as a sugar substitute. But we can buy it in a "Reformhaus" - sort of a health food store. They sell it as powder or drops or leaves and mostly under "natural cosmetics". It is quite sweet, you need just a drop of it and if you start using it for baking the quantity is in the beginning a little tricky.
