Yesterday I went into a newsagents in the centre of my town (which is quite small and fairly conservative) with my 7 year old brother to buy him a comic. Magazines with topless women on the front were on the lower shelves, there were even a few on the same shelf as the kids' comics. I was already a bit annoyed about this, but I got in the que to buy my brother's comic anyway. While I was queing I noticed some DVD's next to the counter (not behind the counter and not very hard up). I only had to glance briefly at the DVD's to realise that they were porn. I didnt really want to look too closely, but I'm pretty sure that they were hardcore.
Is this kind of thing normal? It might just be that I'm incredible sheltered, because like I said, I live in a really conservative town. I thought there were laws about this kind of thing?
Any comments? x x x

I'd say it wan't normal. Usualy the kids mags are on the lower shelfs so little kids can reach them, and porn on the top shelf...so kids can't.
When you go into a vid shop they do display porn dvds along with the rest of the dvds, but nothing with an obscene picture.
I think this is generally true anyway, and yeah I think it sounds inappropriate

I THINK IT IS NORMAL BECAUSE I SEE IT ALL THE TIME. I WOULD RATHER IT NOT BE THIS WAY THOUGH. I MEAN IF A STORE IS GOING TO SELL BOTH KIDS AND ADULT MAGS THEN THEY SHOULDN'T EVEN BE NEAR EACH OTHER.

you can hate me now but I won't stop now cause I can't stop now you should hate me now but I won't stop now cause I can't stop now, you can hate me now, you can hate me nowOffline

sounds very inappropriate! you'd think they'd have the sense to put that kind of thing where kids can't see it!

Exactly!
But, that's not normal and is inappropriate.

It's pretty normal lately.. I went to a farmers market that had a lot of different stores and there was porn magazines and videos in every store, right in the open. (Even in the music store..) Its pretty nasty, I really don't want to see that. It seems that no one really cares what kids see anymore. My mom works at a preschool and a lot of parents take their kids to see R rated movies (kids 4 and younger..) and talk and do stuff in front of their kids. They know way too much for their age -__-.

Online

from what i've seen in movies, the adult movies in video stores are in a completely separate room.
edited to add that i was talking about movies about the US.

this stuff is more and more mainstream. women's magazines are all about how women should be and so are men's. lol i think its bad to have kids confronted with it all the time. or myself actually.
im not against porn. people know porn is porn. what i am against is how its becoming more and more normal. the stuff in playboy is actually a lot less graphic than nuts and zoo, and those are "lifestyle" apparantly. apart from the effects of porn on some of th workers i think the most dangerous thing is the normalising because in a lifestyle magazine every example of a woman is a sex object or a nagging annoying thing. its the same on adverts. women are all either models, mums or "the missus" and the blokes are all beer swilling footy-watching slobs that can't think for themselves. its funny apparently. im not saying theres something wrong with these ads or mags, or games for that matter. its the sheer quantity being shoved in our faces every day.
theres a lot of backlash atm. sexual crime is up, theres a lot of right wing "back-to-the-kitchen" sympathisers for the poor white middle-class man with no rights anymore... look at the BNP! under 6% rape conviction, more money given to animal charities than womens shelters, and apparently in all this porn is meant to empower us because we then have power over men. dont want power over them. just equal rights. ive been on too many feminist sites recently haha rant over.

I don't think breasts are obscene.

I'm pretty sure in the UK, or in Scotland at least, there's a law concerning these things. I remember a WH Smiths here getting into trouble for having their adult magazines in the wrong place. x
Offline

I don't think that's normal.

Like someone said before, kids know too much at such a young age, like 4 year olds and that.
Its just abit wrong that the adult magazines and kids ones are in the same place.
Offline

yeah theyre wanting to start sex ed at that age here now. i suppose its responsible seeing as they see so much stuff that explanation is required or it leads to kid-on-kid sexual abuse and underage sex/inappropriate behavior.
yep... its probably the only responsible thing that can be done as sex sells ads and TV and internet and posters etc...
isnt it bloody SHOCKING that we need to give 4 year olds sex ed to be responsible?!?!?!
this world...

If you don't like it, why not take your money and sibling elsewhere? If you don't think it's appropriate, then it's also not appropriate to stay there. If you think it's illegal and harmful, then it's your responsibility to go to the police, if you think that would be the best course of action.
I don't know what kind of store it is, but maybe they mainly cater to "adult" wants and have the other comics there as an afterthought.

Has anyone asked the question if the magazines were placed there by customers rather than the staff? When i go to the store I look thru the mag, and of course just stick it back where ever not thinking about it.
I do not however look at porn mags in a convienence store though. I am not afraid of the porn store, so I would just go there.

That's a good point. By the way the OP worded it, I assumed it was an actual display.
The porn stores around here are generally really creepy
Besides, I don't think those kinds of films (or any really, except maybe a good independent or documentary) is a good use of my money.

We have excellent porn stores here. I know that this is totally off topic now. Very well lit, very friendly people, and even though most of the people in there are dudes, it's totally done in a professional way.

Yes. sounds to me to be a bit innapropriate....But different areas have different rules/regulations regarding such things. And I don't know where you are from.
I'm originally from Michigan, and currently live in Indiana. In both states, cigarettes are now accessed through a cashier from behind the counter. Adult bookstores are 'over 21 only'. Most regular bookstores won't sell adult related material anymore, unless it's the 'self-help' sex books. And those are usually as far away from the kid section as they can get it, and not very obvious to the casual eye. If they do have the magazines, they are behind the counter and accessible only through the cashier. As far as the movie rental places goes, I haven't seen any of them carry adult movies in over 15 years. Granted, there will always be the exception, but I haven't seen or heard of one in a while.

id say here in england its actually quite normal sadly, esp softporn disguised as lifestyle like nuts n zoo

I think it's a bit odd considering to my knowledge pornography was to be placed on a higher shelf and it's to have a black bag to cover up the naughty bits.
Pornography is for 18+ in the states which is why there are guidelines on how to package them for public places.
I do believe I would have talked to a manager on duty.
The naked body may be a natural thing to be unshamed of, but these guidelines are put up for a reason.
Offline

I think that is utterly disgusting! How can they have that stuff in such a public place?! I know in my city any magazines (Unless it's at a pornography store) that are considered pornographic material have to be blacked out..and you will only find pornographic movies at porn shops or sometimes at movie stores in special 18+ rooms...

You dont have to go so far...what about page 3 in the sun and other tabloids?
When i first saw it i was shocked....there i was having breakfast and skip a page and a smiling topless young woman was staring at me, i did a double take as i registered her perky boobs and the fact that she was only wearing her knickers...
I wondered to whom i shoud ask about this massive culture shock i had just received...was it to be my guardian or my teachers? Maybe my house mistress...lol
No need, there was a documentary on tv soon after about the birth of the page 3 girl....
Anyway i dont get how young men can bear to read Nuts or Zoo, its so brain dead...and a lot of the girls are just blah!
But back to the original question...yep its unusuall to have porn with comics...even comic stores set the erotica comics apart from mainstream stuff.
You should have mentioned it to the cashier, maybe it was set by a customer rather than the staff....

you move recently? or was it just a while before you picked up the paper? lol. yeah. its not that boobs are offensive.. just alienating. its like saying you arent supposed to be reading this. you can but its smart newsy stuff for men to enjoy deary not you, go read heat and learn about diets and tan lines. that way we can write lots of offensive drivel and "irony" and the only women reading will be the ones sucked into believing its liberating or humour so that they can fit into our little mens world. of course if theyre fit we will only wanna screw them and if they arent we will ignore them but we hope so badly for the former that if we are, say, an online newspaper we will jump on and chat up any of them... ok i went off

I thought they had to cover up any images and could show the name of the publication.
Kinda off topic but I feel that some of the horror movie covers at the video store are totally gross, scary and I would rather children see boobies then somebody in bondage and bleeding
