A while ago I posted on the heavy metal music thread and had a good banter there, but now its serious talk time.
Last night I went to see Iron Maiden at Twickenham (London) and Avenged Sevenfold supported. For a couple of months for me i've been listening to A7x solidly so I was well excited about seeing them (probably more than maiden as i've seen them twice already).
The only problem is nobody seemed to like Avenged, I mean what is wrong with Twickenham?????? People were swearing when the fans were putting their rock symbol hands in the air!!?! People even started through bottles of beer at them!!!!!!
I was so angry at these iron maiden fans! I was screaming my heart out the whole way through A7x, and its good I'm a girl as i'm sure the 'non' avenged fans would have punched me one if i was a blokeee!
Just what is up with that?!?!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!
Somebody explain it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!????????????

Because to some old school metal fans, Avenged Sevenfold are in the same league as Fall Out Boy and MCR.....more about image than music. A7x aren't the most popular band amongst the over 20's lol.
Also, Iron Maiden fans can be pretty hardcore. I nearly got punched at Download last year for accidently standing on a thugs shoe laces.....not my fault he's too stupid to tie them!! That said, Maiden's set was amazing. xxx

I agree with Gueld about Avenged Sevenfold.
I was at Download last year, absolutly amazing! Loved Maiden!
Only problem I had was that fact that im 5ft 2inches and all the tall people (where ever i go) always want to stand infront of me.
xXx

Yeah, I was at Evanescence before they came on and a huge group of 6ft tall fat guys decided to crush everyone in order to get to the front for Maiden like 15 before Ev had even finished lol. x

Yeah but it doesn't seem to make sense, last time i saw maiden, trivium supported (i hate them) and they had circle pits going. Well they did have a cup of 'wee' thrown at them. I think even the fans at twickenham were really calm for maiden.
The people who didnt seem to like A7x were the younger people, I saw a few blokes getting into them but everybody seemed to like the other support acts more.
Lauren Harris was first on stage and I recon the only reason the Maiden fans liked her was because she was Steve's daughter!!!!!!!!

So because you don't like Trivium you think they should have been treated worse? Trivium, although not the best band in the world are still not in the same category as Ax7. Avenged Sevenfold are a 'kerrang' band that are ridiculed by many I'm afraid, just because you like them it doesn't mean everyone else does. Having them support Maiden is a bit weird anyway, it's like having Fightstar supporting Metallica
.
I know it sucks that an entire crowd of thousands didn't have the same love of one band as you, I wasn't pleased when Biffy Clyro got a poor reception at the Linkin Park gig, but they too were a strange choice for support and were really playing to the wrong crowd. x

Yayy I Was At That Concert And I Agree A7x Are Brill But I Also Agree With Gueld It Wasnt The Right Support For That Audience.

i've seen A7x and they rocked my socks!

I find that alot of the time the support slots are filled by bands that dont match the headliner in fanbase. Its a shame as these support acts are pretty good in their own right.
And yead, 5ft 2 as well and oh my god does it annoy me when the tallest person in the building sees the spot in front of me as the best place to be.

This always happens. Older fans always decide that newer bands aren't "hardcore" enough. As far as Avenged's popularity with the older/younger set, I (the younger at 20) can take'm or leave'm, while my brother the older (at close to 30) seems to prefer them, and he's a much bigger metal fan. I'm ambivalent to most metal (I don't hate it but don't love it either) I'd describe myself as a more of a pop-punk fan. But the trend of making fun of younger bands, or in fact any newer bands isn't a new thing, and just wait and see the fur fly when a band becomes too "mainstream" and is accused of "selling out" as though being popular enough to have fans is a bad thing.

Did I say there was something wrong with Fightstar? I was just using them as an example....if Fightstar were to support Metallica the majority of the crowd would be likely to abuse them as both bands have very different fan bases, just like Ax7 and Maiden..

I went to graspop in Belgium, i saw bullet for my valentine, avenged sevenfold, iron maiden, arch enemy, at the gates and manny more... but avenged sevenfold was the best of all

Actually i doubt the fan bases would be that different. you obviously havent heard some of fightstars heavier stuff. They did a cover of Iron Maidens 'Leper Messiah' which personally i think is better than Iron maidens version.
Tbh one difference in the fan base could be that the Metallica fans are probably nearly 50 now... but hey.. who knows?

i think most people that like iron maiden like other classic rock/heavy metal and dont like emo-core or anything like that. can't talk for all of course, but classic-metal is very... 1337 it tands to have fairly strong views on modern music. i know my friends hate trivium and the frontguy got a shoe and a battery courtesy of them. i dont think its right to do that stuff to someone thats on stage, but a lot of fans of particular genres hate other genres. like a friend of mine said "the chavs may be worse but its like theyre from a different street. emos are pissing on my lawn"

It's really nothing to do with musical style in the end, it's down to attitude. Fightstar got abuse at Download this year, much of it because of Charlie and his Busted past. It's a shame I know but prejudices will never go away and Fightstar will automatically be branded as pish but many 'heavy' fans as they are not "metal" enough.
And hey!! I'm a Metallica fan AND a fightstar fan and I'm not pushing 50!!

Gueld is basically right. Iron Maiden are classic. They were out there back in the beginning of it all and their music is still unique and their style relatively unreplicated considerring. Avenged Sevenfold's music isn't too bad, but like allot of bands its ruined by a few things such as the vocals. It's hard to explain but there's something very distasteful and threatening to a man's taste about it. It's like a bad version of iron maiden or one of these whingy teenage angst/hardcore indy annoying punk bands. A fan's taste is important and defines them and their eye for quality. It's important for them to protect that and maintain it which doesn't just mean showing appreciation of overall good music but also dislike of bad music.
Although the music isn't as fast or complex as previously in jazz or with contempory metal Iron Maiden exhibits an overall brilliance. I personally prefer fast complex music. Not easy listening. Sure iron Maiden isn't that but it's not as intense as some of the things I listen to. The thing about Iron Maiden is just just their legacy but that in their best songs everything fits perfectly. The melody is great, the rhyme, the instruments, and most importantly the singing is awesome (at least I think Dickinson). There are very few good singers in metal today. There are some but it's almost all death/black. Some is good (Opeth, Macabre) but the majority of it just sounds like someone with a really sore throat simultaneously gargling blood while screaming random things. Some really good non black/death but still metal bands (or similar) with good singers are Morgana Lefey (Lefay), Spiritual Beggars, Angra (sometimes), Motorhead, etc.
As well as their sucky vocals, Avenge Sevenfold is just another in a string of clone bands. It's not particularly unique or special.

I saw A7X about 3 years ago in the wolfrun, and all the way through the show the lead guy kept a cap on with a scarf over his face and dark glasses on! He didnt even speak! I thought it was so rude I never listened to them again!
