Alright this was a new one on me...

The word of the day was, "Tritter". I had never heard of this and looked it up and it does not exist. Except of course for last names.

That sucked! lol

Re: Ughh! what is up with wordo?

I don't think it's really appropriate to use words that adults don't know let alone the young users would know either. Yes we do not need to define them but if we do not know they exist how are we expected to be able to guess the word in the alloted "tries" we are given? I've been lucky a few times but many times just frustrated. I got ONE word that I actually knew once. Warmly... I was in Advanced Placement English when I was in high school and even I don't know what the heck some of these words are. And if the older players that should have a decade or two more wisdom than I don't know then something is wrong.

My suggestion is this, there is a hard jigsaw puzzle and there is an easy one. I think they should do the same with wordo. That way if some of the players do enjoy the challenge they can continue to try their hand at it. But I myself have become too frustrated with it. It's a little difficult to guess a word I don't know exists, especially if it's not in a common everyday dictionary I would have here in my own home.

Re: Ughh! what is up with wordo?

you don't need to know the words to be able to guess them - you can use the same strategy used on games like 'wheel of fortune' to guess them even if you don't have a clue about the word. use your first guess to fill in the fields with 'a e i o u' and then you know the vowels. use the next guess to enter 'r s t l n' which are the most common letters in english words. after that, use the clues you've gotten to try to place the letters. then use your knowledge of how words are structured to figure out the remaining letters  - for example, if you are given a 'q', it's nearly guaranteed that the next letter is a 'u' because that is the rule in english. there are no words in the english language that end in 'i' except 'ski', so you know where the 'i' in a word CAN'T go. stuff like that. smile good luck!

Re: Ughh! what is up with wordo?

I don't think the games that hard although I have received a few questionable words. You have ample opportunity to guess every letter of the alphabet and then from there even if you have no idea what the word is generally common sense will tell you the most likely spots for the letters and you have a few guesses for trial and error.

The word couldn't have been "tritter" because that is 7 letters, and all the Wordo words are 6-lettered words.  It was probably triter, which you will find in the dictionary, i.e., "more trite."

Some of the words used in Wordo are definitely obscure and arcane.  If they weren't a little difficult, what would be the point of making the game competitive? They might as well give everyone daily points for just logging in.

Think of the game as an opportunity to broaden your vocabulary, and make the words used your own "Word of the Day" to look up and use in conversation or written communication sometime during your day. If you're very young or English is not your primary language, there are always 6-lettered word cheats online to help you guess the answers. Make playing Wordo your own personal learning experience, and you'll gain knowledge and a wider vocabulary as well as IQ and BA points.

Re: Ughh! what is up with wordo?

I know that some of the words are not real words.  That shouldn't be debated.  The issue is that because most of the words that are words are so obscure or in some cases obsolete that the game becomes trial and error or random guesses and there is VERY little skill or strategy required to win the game...so for some people (I include myself in this group) it's not fun.  I play it because of the reward...it's a burden to play it.  I was so excited when it appeared because I love word games and thought it would be fun, but after getting a few nonsense words and then some obsolete words...it just stopped being fun.  I just run through the vowels and then go through the alphabet in order and once I have all the letters it's a matter of arranging them...I get the word everytime, but it requires no effort on my part or brain power.  It's a shame, because the game has a lot of potential.

Surely if a word cannot be found in a standard dictionary then it shouldn't be included!

But what is the standard dictionary?? Nobody is going to have a completed up to date revised dictionary in their home that contains every word in the english language........

The words used for Wordo are words that are found in the SOWPODS dictionary.........

"The SOWPODS word list comprises words from two official dictionaries used in various parts of the world—Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (OSPD, derived from the Merriam-Webster's Dictionary and four other college dictionaries), and Official Scrabble Words (OSW, derived from the Chambers Dictionary). The name is an anagram of the two abbreviations."

The SOWPODS dictionary is used for Scrabble tournaments (ie word games)

Yes there are some words that are obsure or not used very much, but this is what makes word games fun............ you have to actually think WHOA!!

PS. Could you imagine if someone at a scrabble tournament stood up and yelled "CHEAT...... I dont know that word, not fair" haha nobody would listen

Re: Ughh! what is up with wordo?

Yesterday I got "Faller" as one of my words.

Now, the only proven uses of the word include a reference to "one who fells timber" from the 1800s, an obs. reference to a piece of a mill from 1637 and the ubiquitous "one who falls...".  However, this last quotation is "fallare, or he {th}at oftyn tyme fallythe".

I doubt highly that the Bimbo software writers are delving into Middle English and obscure slangs to come up with words for the game.  Therefore, I see a glitch.

The Oxford English Dictionary (OED) is available online.  "The OED covers words from across the English-speaking world, from North America to South Africa, from Australia and New Zealand to the Caribbean. It also offers the best in etymological analysis and in listing of variant spellings, and it shows pronunciation using the International Phonetic Alphabet."

Students have access in their libraries and on their interwebs; the rest of us impoverished linguists have to pay to use it.   This is where we turn when we need serious information about the word.

Re: Ughh! what is up with wordo?

Hello! Has anyone got the glitch that it says a letter is NOT in the word and then when you lose and shows the word, it has a letter it didn't show blue or pink?

Personally, I really like the obscure words. I have the merriam-webster site bookmarked to figure them out afterwards!

And does BO stand for bimbo dollars? I've never gotten money. Sometimes I don't get points at all, which is annoying, but I still love the game.

Having 2 wordos would be good. An easy and a hard. That way even the young players can play!

Thanks for reading!
