Re: Goth And Get Frowned Upon. Yet Rolemodel In School

Goth are a subculture. Subcultures represent 'noise', 'interference'. Society likes to think and like to pretend that it organised with hierachy, when subcultures emerge, mods in the 60s, goths early 90s, emos currently. it represents a rift in a 'organised' society. You guys should be proud that you represent oppersition and even if you dont intend to make such a point, at least some people out there realise that all is not dandy in the 'normal' world.

Re: Goth And Get Frowned Upon. Yet Rolemodel In School

What I dont get is why people bully people who are different. Imagine that you're the "normal" kid. What would drive you to hit or bully someone who's obviously quieter, more reserved and different?? Are they afraid of something that doesnt fit neatly into their world? Is their faith in their own reality so fragile that anything that rocks the boat has to be beaten down very quickly?

Re: Goth And Get Frowned Upon. Yet Rolemodel In School

i consider myself a goth. i dress in black all the time, but my face isn't paper white or anything although my make-up is usually dark. my natural blonde-ish hair is now dark purple. however i'm a very sociable person and i don't think i know any other goths. i've never been called a freak or any other sort of insult because of the way i look, but i do get a looot of unwanted attention on the street from certain types of people, usually nostalgic communists or extremely rude, unmannered guys who think whistling or calling you different "flattering" adjectives will get you to marry them.

i got great grades in highschool, i've been a volunteer in several activities and i'm doing quite well in college. i'm also rarely depressed. rarely.

as i see it, as long as you're honest with yourself and your apparel is in tune with your inner self, you should be happy. but i do get annoyed at people who, let's say, adopt an emo style of clothing and pretend to be depressed and cut themselves because they want to belong to an emo group, because it's trendy or something. i find that stupid.

Yeah I totally agree, I think theres nothing wrong with people who wanna express themselves with the way they dress. Its their life and they choose their own attitude and beliefs. I dont like the way people follow the crowd to be liked.

I accept all no stake challenges.

We are who are we are. It just irrates me how some people accuse you of not beeing somthing. When its you inside are what you are.

People are free to what they want to be , look like and act. Yet many people who dont like what you wear frown upon it.

i know what you mean, i have tattoos all down my right arm, and have dreadlocks. For a girl that is seemingly frowned upon.  but it's something i like, even though my parents hate it and i get weird looks all the time.  but i am proud because i'm doing something for myself, and i have learnd not to care what others think smile

Iv learnt to raise my head and laugh at the comments , and most of the time they do seem pretty amuzing.  They make me chuckle.

My parents have accepted me for who and what i am. And they told me they was pretty proud of me (:

They're not the only ones.  wink

I do agree with the whole goths are treated as some kind of psychopathic group. Whenever something bad e.g. school shootings occur the media always target groups ''fascinated, obsessed with death'' and exploit that. I believe it was Columbine or something around that time that Slipknot were accused of inspiring the massacre. The media will always find someone to single out, but for the majority of the time they are the ones to blame for blowing things completely out of proportion; just because someone is different to what is deemed acceptable doesn't mean they're the bad guy.

Anyway...I'm pretty much goth now, and I'm insanely optimistic. I do wear a lot of black [mainly because it matches my hair blebl] but it doesn't mean I'm manic depressive.

"Oh, woe is me! How I wish for the world to crumble and disappear into the very blackness of my shirt. The world deserves to die and the Horsemen are coming...and I don't care because my heart is black and shriveled. Society has done this to me''

^

Obviously what every moron who insults us from afar stereotypes us as.

Maybe it's ok in other societies. But not in here. U r judged for what u'r wearing mostly! The first impression is the most important!

Unfortunately so. Yet, if people can't look pass the clothes you're wearing and get to know the person in them, then I find they're not worth talking to in the first place.

You are always quick to assume the worst in others yet have you not made friends who have a different image?

I have friends who come from many different backgrounds and cultures. I have emo friends, geek friends, nerd friends, weird friends, sporty friends. I even have a few chav friends. Yet, I find it to be a hard task to ever look past the clothes of most chavs...because most of the time they're just morons. Unfortunately a great deal of this country [UK] has become the chav stereotype and as I'm sure everyone in this country has found is one of the truest stereotypes around.

I agree that society has it's stupid labels as already said but I just think that people group together then turn against others no matter what.

Only certain groups do that. The chavs do it because it's programmed into them. Those who are outside the norm who do it are just posers. I think it's a bit extreme to say ''no matter what'' - because you are labeling all groups as unfriendly attackers. I go around in groups of mixed people..and you don't see us turning against everyone. We're scared to go near chavs because they will attack you for being different.

I have known groups of goths to bully others just because they weren't goths themselves.
For me it works all ways.

This is something I have never seen. I do not know where you are from, but that doesn't happen around here...goths and emos are a peaceful sort. We are in the minority. The chavs control the streets, and because of this we're too scared to roam them when they're close. I'm afraid round here it doesn't work both ways. If a group of goths saw a single chav they wouldn't try to attack him...they'd just ignore him, however if it was vice-versa I assure you it would be very different.

Everyone needs to just accept everyone.

Wishful thinking I believe!    snif

smile

When I go home people'll ask me, "Hey Hoot, why do you do it man? What, you some kinda war junkie?" You know what I'll say? I won't say a g**d**n word. Why? They won't understand. They won't understand why we do it. They won't understand that it's about the men next to you, and that's it. That's all it is.

yes. it a little sad but true. like we cabt help labeling others, even though we dont wanna get labeled ouer self... and im sorry to say it, but i dont have the time to know all i see.

and the media are after goths. ore they have been. it have changed in Denmark. but it isnt just the media. i have meet a lot of gohts/punks/emos... what they wanna be called and they can be some of the most intollerant people i have ever met! have heared them say thats its not okay to use violence (exept for them), that they should be accepted by society, but then refuces to have anything to do with others than people how look like them and have the samme point of views and that it is okay for them to act this way, simply cuz they wear black and are dumb enough to say it load and proude...

It's all just clothes. If you are different you are different inside. Image is a petty thing that means nothing when it all comes down.

Clothes have always been part of our identity. There is no denying it. Everyone has there own attitude too. Yet i still dont see why people are not looking past this.

People are shallow and beauty is skin deep to the majority. People judge by stereotypes and this is never going to change - unless we have some kind of world peace ;]

I think we all need to be grateful that there are people who see beyond the skin...''beauty is in the eye of the beholder'' after all.

I So agree with beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  But then we couldnt have world peace. As much as many of us wish it were to be true , there would always been some sort of disagreement along the lines.

Re: Goth And Get Frowned Upon. Yet Rolemodel In School

People used to beat me up because I wasn't a chav.
I wasn't a goth or anything, I was just me.
I dressed how I liked, wore kitsch shoes, fabulous bags and crazy accessories (school uniforms) and tied my hair in a sweeping side pattern with a pretty ribbon, a different colour for each day. I wore extravagent beaded and bright broches, I wore hats in funky prints (OMG wat a tramp lyk) and I didn't wear make-up (biggest sin of all).
I still wear what I like, still customise, still have handmade things, still have funky prints... But now I wear make-up and everything has changed.
Or it could be that the chavs that picked on me all failed at GCSE and are now in McDonalds getting a McQualification rather than in sixth form getting a REAL qualification like all the 'freaks'.

I have such a handbag fetish that started when I was 11... There's a wonderful shop that handmakes them in town and I basically live there so I get first choice.
I also love all things kitsch.

Iv had a thing for bizzare items and bags. I had to buy a toroto bag when i saw one at an anime/manga convention. I Fell in love with it.

Hey, did you notice, two people are NEVER the same.

And your ordinary neighbour, might as well be on the top 10 of Miss Bimbo. ;-) Or he might be a serial killer.
So you can wear whatever you like, you will ALWAYS be different.

I like most people regardless of how they dress, but i always found it easy to be friends with people and was never particularly clique-ish.  i was always stunned when people were jerks because of the style of dress they were wearing.  Goths Rule!  you're the only ones who have make-up that matches my skin (I am seriously vampire pale, and not for lack of trying to get tan.... *sigh*)

Re: Goth And Get Frowned Upon. Yet Rolemodel In School

I went to uni with a girl that was goth, and she was one of the most beautiful people that i have ever met. Don't be put off by people who judge you. This judgement usually developes from a lack of understanding. Humans generally fear what they don't understand. The girl i went to uni with was very open and encouraged me to ask as many questions as i wanted. i'm a very curious person so i asked everything possible, this helped me to find a wonderful new respect for goths. On her part she was very open to everyone, ehich really helped, she was one of the most liked girls on campus.

People fear what they don't understand.

You might be the nicest, smartest, most positive and fun kid in school but most people only ever judge a book by it's cover and so it goes over their heads.

I think a lot of people believe that Goths are obsessed with death and gore and that they sit around feeling sad and cynical all the time. It's just another stereotype.

So... you're from poland? wink

I was something between punk/goth/metal at secondary school, one of 3 maybe in the whole school and surely the most outstanding wink Almost all of my class hated me and it made me feel really good, because they were a bunch of idiots.
It would be a bad sign if people like them liked me. It would mean that i am like them, because such people are afraid of what they do not understand so the only way to be liked is to be like them and i do not consider being ultra-stupid, rude, smoking to look like an adult, dressing like a w*ore (i'm talking about 14-16 years olds), calling people who got good grades suckers etc. as being 'cool'.

But now grew up a little and i see that subcultures have nothing to do with being original etc. You may be original in small group, but if you'll think of it - you're goth and there are thousands of goths that look just like you. There's nothing original about it. Subcultures just put a limit to creativity. There's a lot more possibilities of being original without closing ourselves in subcultures.

I wear different clothes everyday. Once i look like a metal, once like a rocker, sometimes i mix metal + glamour + emo etc. and i feel a lot better this way.

I also don't like when some subcultures consider some outfits as 'theirs'. You know - when you dress up similar to emo and there's someone who says 'omg you're not a real emo! poser!' lol... that's most stupid thing EVER!

And other stupid thing (omg i'm so... off topic): people from subcultures that judge if you're poser or if you're true. There are some situations where it's acceptable like when someone says 'i'm so metal dark death goth ROAAARR! i listen to metallica and within temptation and evanescence and linkin park YEAH! EVL!' or 'i'm totally punk i listen to avril lavigne and OmG i LoVe PeTe WenTZ!!!!!11' - no need to comment.
BUT - i was on some emo forum few days ago and there was a topic 'everyone sholud write something about themselves here!' so i got there to see what they're writing. I found i dialog like that:
-New Guy: i'm blablabla blablabla <guy says something about himself, nevermind>
-TheOneAndOnlyTrueEmo:   So you're an emo? tell me something about this band <name of the band here, i don;t remember>
- New guy: i don't know much about it and actually i'm going for dinner now so i'll write something later
-TheOneAndOnly: yeah, sure, don't forget to find something about it in google, poser.

Omg... there's nothing, i say NOTHING more pathetic like testing people like this! Like it was some kind of sect! Or like being an emo is a gift from god lol! Like you weren't worth it to be an emo LOL!
The other thing is that not everyone likes the same bands! For example i like really metal, but i don't know nothing about metallica because in my opinion it's a piece of crap (not counting few songs). So if someone asked me about metallica... i would LAUGH in his face wink
And last but not least - some people are more interested in MUSIC of the band than in band's private life or even history of a band wink

Confession: i can't write short posts when i've got something to say -_- maybe i should copy this and make new topic out of it?

Oh! And another thing up-to-topic that just came to my head:
While i was on the emo forum i read a lot of topics ('our poetry' lol, political views, what is emo, how to be emo etc.). I know that it's not good to judge people by appearances and subcultures, but judging them by their thoughts and what they write at forum... THEY ARE ALL THE SAME! Everything they write is completely the same! 0 individuality! Like it all was written by one person! The only differences were that some of them were more stupid and i found very few person that actually could write almost correctly (i know i do a lot mistakes in english, but it's not my native language).

Re: Goth And Get Frowned Upon. Yet Rolemodel In School

I was a goth and then punk in high school, but there were always a lot of different "types" at my school, so no one really cared. I had friends who were goths, preps, emo kids, everything. As I got older, I stopped trying to get myself noticed for being different, and I stopped spending so much time and money finding clothing that so many other people wear anyway. I find it a little irritating when I meet up with some people I knew in high school, and they go and tell people that I "sold out" because I got out of the high school I'm-so different-and-everyone-else-is jealous-those-stupid-sheep mentality.

Most Goths are beautiful.
I wear Gothic clothing too sometimes, but not the victorian style.
More like a hybrid between Batcave and Cyber.
I don't feel comfortable in 'the latest trend' clothes.

I Label my self as goth , we have the right to label ourself.

I Like to wear elegant clothing , i don't want to show my skin , i don't like a lot of the latest trends. People may not call me goth , but they don't have the right.
