One thing I do like (from the little I've seen in Japan) is how people can dress however they choose and it's accepted. Whereas in the US, I'm sure they'd receive stares galore and who knows what else.

So why? Japan is very tolerant, isn't it?
No. LOquence is right. By dressing the way they do and wearing that make up they are rebelling against the set ideal of beauty in Japan (pale skin, dark hair)

I think they look cute sometimes, like in this picture. And I like the idea, and what they are rebelling against.
She doesn't look cute in this picture. She looks like sweet-idiot.

Gals are awesome.
Just a note: The pictures which the original poster posted depict a pretty out-dated, dead sub-section of the Gal-look. Neon colors, outrageous, platform boots and intensive whitexblack eye make-up are so 2000. :3 Nowadays said style has greatly evolved and somewhat toned down (exept for hime gyaru, which is very in-your-face). The attitude is still deliciously ferocious.

I thought it was the other way. It looks like they're conforming to the western idea of beauty.
Not at all. xD
And good links lollollollollol

Not my cup of tea but I don't think it's completely frightful. Maybe a little outrageous!
Prefer Lolita myself~

Personally, I quite like Japanese fashion. England tends to stay on the "safe side" with skinny jeans ruling the cat walks for months on end, and having returning trends. I like how the japanese step out and go for it, rather than sticking to whatever they see on the magazine covers...

I like it. Not sure why, but she looks neat to me. I've always liked costumey, dress uppy things. I surely wouldn't try this myself. I'd be fired and probably divorced. (well, my husband might actually like this)

It's not my favourite Japanese trends (And trust me, they have trends... and I've never seen a guy look better in a skirt!), but it's not that bad. Like Lollollollollol said, the trend has been updated, and the pics are a bit outdated. It's also more popular among the richer girls, though not exclusively. I tend to favour the elegant lolita style a bit more, but... Well. Like I said, it's not that bad. I've some American girls lookin' worse.

Those are very old representations of a trend that, like all fashion styles, changes all the time.
I love ganguro/GYARU, but more in its current form than anything else.

It's not really new, been around quite a while.

It's a very extreme look, definitely verging on clownish, but I respect the effort this girl went to. She must really want it. This is NOT a five-minute face.
Also, if you don't have some embarassing pictures of a misspent youth, you probably were missing out.

I think it is quite strange.
I think Japanese women are gorgeous and should embrace their unique qualities, rather than go tanning and bleach their hair to look like Barbi. It shoes how our distorted American ideal of beauty is taking over the world.

I actually like it!!!
I think it would look better without the strip ♥

ganguro is awsome and lolita/gothic lolita. if i could choose one place in the world to go shopping it would be tokyo...or more specificaly harajuku. you can ear whatever you want there and its not only accepted but embraced. i love the thought of that

i think everybody is allowed to wear whatever they want, and i think that japanese fashion is interresting...although i couldn;t wear that style, i think simple is more unique and interesting, everybody is trying so hard to be different...we are all different and unique, and it is already a trend to be different...
You may say I'm a dreamer

I think Yamambas can only be understood in Japan, where they have so many extreme fashion styles! I like them though (which doesn't mean I'd dress like them
)

Haha Aussies have been doing this for decades!!!
Find any beach in Australia and you'll find plenty of people doing this with their sunscreen. It's great!
Payback comes when you get burned and you've got a rude word practically tattooed onto your stomach because that's where the sunscreen was.
