i know, everyone does have different ideas on the whole emo situation, with most people believing that "an emo" wears skinny jeans, band tshirts, converse/vans, studded belts, facial piercings and stretched ears, hair covering your face, self harmers and music like my chemical romance being emo. but in actual fact, there isn't a such thing as "an emo", and if you research ti, you'll find that emo is just a genre of music.

Everyone is always saying, "People can't be emo, it's a style of music!"
But so many people use emo to describe people now that I would argue that the word has evolved to mean the people in the scene as well.
And it's so much easier to say, "I ran into a bunch of emos today" than to say, "I ran into a group of people that were dressed as if they were in the scene of people that listen to emo music."
I don't understand why people get tetchy about calling people emo when they're quite happy to call a person goth or punk. They're both music based cultures as well. And like both of those cultures, there's so much more to it than just the music.
Sorry about that rant, I'm not trying to be mean. I just keep seeing people saying the same thing everywhere.

Yes! All emo boys are hot. But goth boys are hotter! Nothing gets me worked up more than seeing pretty boys in eyeliner.

Uhhhh, no, emo is a genre of music, and only a genre of music. If people were going around saying "you're rap", or you're "blues" you'd look at them like they're idiots. People are about as emo as they are electroclash. End of story.
This is something I posted twice already, but I'm trying to inform the ignorant masses, so here:
At first, I thought "oh, the stupidity" Then I saw something about emo being a genre of music and thought "one non ignorant person", but alas, I kept reading. Let me correct all the rudely misinformed people out there.
Emo is NOT a type of style. Emo is not a category AT ALL. Emo is a type of music, and not Fall Out Boy, Panic! at the Disco, or My Chemical Romance. Those bands are untalented and sad. The first two rip off amazing movies and books, such as Closer and Invisible Monsters. Generally, they're lame.
Emo music is actually a good genre, that 95% of the people tossing around the word emo have never ever listened to. It derived from punk rock(which most people don't know much about either, even though it's been around for decades and not hard to classify, albeit subgenres), and was basically punk rock with acoustic guitars and slower instrumentals and more emotional lyrics. Note, emotional does NOT mean depressed. Depression is not the only emotion humans are capable of feeling, obviously. Emo bands, real emo bands, include Sunny Day Realestate and Jawbreaker. Thank you, and goodnight.

Scene kids don't listen to emo music. They listen to hardcore. Unless they're stupid mallscene or what I refer to as myspace scene. If you listen to a wide range of music (good music) and appear scene to the average person(aka an ignorant one) you're most likely a hipster. But a hipster has stimulating conversation and supports good causes, scene kids normally do not. Both might go to shows. Both might be straightedge, as that has become a big part of the scene and would go with the causes and strong opinions and beliefs of the hipsters. Okay, sorry to not say anything about the original question, but how can I? Emo boys are nonexistant.
Oh and as far as using labels in one place and not in another that's because certain labels do apply. They're kind of like races I suppose, just a fact of life, with a definition, and people who they describe.

Oh and as far as using labels in one place and not in another that's because certain labels do apply. They're kind of like races I suppose, just a fact of life, with a definition, and people who they describe.
I stand by what I said. Popular usage of "emo" to refer to people means that the original meaning of the word has changed. The English language is constantly evolving (or devolving in some cases).
The Goths, as I'm sure you're aware, were a Germanic tribe that existed around the 3-6th centuries (so I suppose it WAS originally used to describe people). It was then used to describe a style of architecture. And then adopted to describe horror novels in the 18th Century. Then a style of music in the 80s. And then finally the subculture surrounding that music. Language is not static. But you seem comfortable with the label to describe the modern subculture in this instance because the definition fits. But the definition hasn't always fit, the definition has changed.
I supposed we should just stick to the original meaning, and say that the word can only be used to describe the Germanic tribes. But then if we did that, then "emo" couldn't be a style of music at all. Emotional is a state of mind, or how someone feels. Music isn't a person, and therefore isn't capable of being "emotional" about anything at all.
And as for "rap" or "blues" not being words to describe people, it is only because people haven't really used the word in this way. If the term became popular enough, then the meaning of the word would change and could be used to describe people. In fact, if you wanted to be innovative I think you could describe a person as "rap" right now.
I understand that you're on a crusade, and that you're sick of people throwing around the emo word without knowing what they're talking about. I'm not trying to say which bands are emo, and which aren't. All I'm saying is that I think the word is out your hands and become something you don't want it to be.
I suppose this comes across as mean or whatever, but that is not my intention. You come across as intelligent in your posts and I respect that. I'm only arguing words and language. I am like a geeky lexical crusader!

Oh no, I don't think it's mean. I appreciate your eloquence. Words can come to evolve and have new connotations. For instance, "hipsters" were orignally the "coolcats" of the forties who were into jazz and predated the beatniks. The word resurfaced in the 90's (i believe, it could be the 21st century, but I'm 97% certain) in a camel marketing ad and turned into a new definition of contemporary hipsters.
But I still don't believe "emo" style exist, it's so vague as well as far removed from what the term originally meant as it's used today. Okay, all of a sudden theres this flashback of that show Recess, or some show like that. One episode someone made up a word and it came to mean different things for all the kids around the school, some used it to mean lame, others cool, others basically "darn", etc. Then all the faculty and admin. thought it was a dirty word. I don't know how I remembered that, but it's like that I suppose. But the thing is, all the kids knew the word had at least one meaning that was specific to them and their friends, everyone here is trying to give emo some global meaning. If we're talking about music, it's not, and never will be Avril Lavigne or Simple Plan or Panic!, you cannot drift that much from a meaning, especially when the emo genre is still around, though it has evolved, and does not need to be redefined.
So, I guess I'll give in a little. Fine by me if you want to call a style emo. But if anyone correlates that style to a music and thinks they exist together then they're wrong. Only one Emo music genre exist, and it does not have a connected fashion style. And I just think everyone else has to except that emo, as it is used in contemporary culture, does not have a universal meaning.

Actually originally 'emo' refered to 'emotional'. The style & music stemmed from what I know as 'teeny goths' & the niave concept that anyone who wears black outfits is depressed, a cutter etc. The fact is 'emo' is a derogatory word, it shouldn't be considered cool & the fact half of the world has embraced it really amazes me.
I also find it amusing that no one actually seems to know what its means, or where it came from & it was the first fashion stereo type to cause national disagreements. ~Rach~
