Re: Infected piercing, need some help

Make sure to keep the area very clean, and dab it with rubbing alcohol and/or hydrogen peroxide 1-2 times per day to kill germs and prevent further infection(I have heard mixed reviews on this, with some other people saying that it will slow the healing process.. I still believe it is better to heal a bit slower without the risk of getting a nasty infection, but that's just me). I believe you are supposed to keep the jewelry in, because otherwise the wound will seal off, be unable to drain and may lead to an abscess.

You should also apply a warm compress to the area- soak a clean cloth in a saltwater solution and microwave it until hot (but not hot enough to burn) and place over your stomach- this should relieve some of the swelling by dilating the blood vessels, and help it drain (this applies to any skin infections: big zits, piercings, ingrown toenails, infected cuts, etc).

Try to not pick/mess with it or move it around! That will just irritate it further. Make sure to avoid messing with the piercing if your hands aren't completely washed and desanitized. When you sleep, make sure your sheets/night shirt are clean as well, otherwise bacteria will get right back in there and make it worse again.  If it gets worse or fails to improve in about a week, I'd see a doctor for some antibiotics.

Re: Infected piercing, need some help

My nose piercing got infected once and i just soaked it with warm (sea) salt water in the morning and eveings and after a few days it was looking better smile I'm not sure if it would work the same on a belly button piercing but you could always try? smile

DO NOT rub it with hydrogen peroxide. Alcohol destroys white blood cells which are good if you have infection, so don't use that neither. You can clean it with salty water, I do that every day.

No alcohol, and no hydrogen peroxide. They destroy healing tissue and would just irritate it further. The best thing to do would be to see a doctor and get antibiotics to treat the infection. They'd also tell you to do warm compresses a few times a day to help draw the infection out. Leave the piercing in, because taking it out would cause it to abscess, which I know has already been said.
Sea salt solution soaks also promote healing. You can buy pure non-iodized sea salt for just a few dollars. You just boil a spoonful in a cup of water, let it cool a little, and use that.

Also a tip.. If you've only had it pierced a few days, you shouldn't be removing the jewelry. It'll irritate the piercing, and it could close pretty quickly. It will be red and sore, that's normal. And some people will mistake lymph for pus. If it's clear or whitish, it's normal. But if it has a yellowish or greenish tone, it's more than likely infected.

Re: Infected piercing, need some help

Saline twice a day and an antibacterical soap, with no fragrances and no colours.
Don't touch it with dirty hands, don't move it too much and don't remove your jewel.
Use only cotton underwear or shirts if they're directly on your piercing.

You choose a piercing with a long healing, darling!
If it hurts, bleed and there's some pus go to the doctor because it's an infection.
If it's a little irritated but it doesn't hurt, don't worry it's normal! In these days you can see also a white liquid, that's plasma.
Good luck girl! wink

Re: Infected piercing, need some help

Put some warm salty water on it, if you can put some in a shot glass and hold it over it for a few minutes it really helps! Or else soak cotton wool in the salty water and hold it on the piercing. Taking Vitamin C or zinc tablets also helps it heal!

I got my bellybutton pierced a few years ago and it does take a long time to heal but yours sounds normal so don't worry smile

just make sure its as clean as possible and clean it with salt water a few time a day. if it still hasn't gone down, go and see your piercer.

Re: Infected piercing, need some help

See a doctor to get some antibiotics for the infection, bathe it daily or even twice daily in a sea salt soak and try not to play with it.

You may have to take out the jewelry, but you can always get it re-pierced if this is the case.

I don't think you should take antibiotics before you've tried everything else. The more antibiotics you get into your body the higher are the chances of you becoming imune to it, and then you'll have some real trouble if you get seriously ill later in life.

Make sure you clean it really good. You wouldn't want the infection to get worse and then spread though your entire body. Which I'm sure it can do.

Re: Infected piercing, need some help

They should have given you something to clean it with when you got it pierced. When I got my ears pierced they gave me a special solution to clean the piercing with. You should leave the piercing in and clean it with that.

Re: Infected piercing, need some help

When i got my naval pierced i had to remove it after about 2 months because the pain was unbearable. Best to do is to go to a PROPER shop to ask about it, and to ask what to do. They might even say itll be best to remove it.

Like other people say, salt water, keep it clean from sweat and dirt and twist it a couple of times to stop it (hate this word) crusting over. but dont mess with it with dirty hands and dont pick at it.

Re: Infected piercing, need some help

If it is infected, then you should keep it clean and don't use dirty hands. Use a saline solution and savlon, but if the infection persists go back to your piercer and if it gets worse, go to your doctor.

I have had some very bad infections in my ears, when I got my lobes and then my second holes, some infections can take a while, while others will swell up and can have the infection cleared out within a few days.

Re: Infected piercing, need some help

Ditto what everyone else said -- also, it's probably not infected. Pus can be a sign of infection, but it's usually more a sign of healing. An infected piercing would be very red, very painful, possible red streaks from the piercing area, and warm to the touch. Green discharge wouldn't be a good sign either.

Also, if you got the piercing a few days ago, the jewelry shouldn't be taken out for at least a couple of months. Don't take it out to clean it -- always clean it with the jewelry IN.

Your piercing may discharge pus for a while -- again -- it's probably just a normal sign of healing. Just do what others have said above (I recommend the warm compresses and sea salt soaks most) and wash your hands every time you clean it.

IF you go the sea salt soak, DO IT RIGHT:

Re: Infected piercing, need some help

I recommend what a lot of other people have said here - keep it clean!

I used contact lense cleaning stuff when I got mine done because it's just a saline solution. Soak it in the stuff a couple of times a day and DO NOT TOUCH THE PIERCING! You also really shouldn't remove it if it's just been pierced.
