Help for Juvinile Green Iguana!

It's my husbands lizard, I don't know reptiles at all aside from what he's told me to do while he's at work which where he is and why I'm not asking him.

I was trying to put water and vegitables in his cage when he he jumped out on the curtain and ran away from me.  Our best mousing cat got to him before I could and made a bit of a mess of the little guy.  ((rather than a assume it'll be understood, I got the lizard to safty.))  As far as I can tell the only wound is at the base of his head where the spin start that's bleed the most.  I can't get him to sit still long enough to cleen him up so I don't know how bad the wound is but does seemed to have stopped.

I'm worried he might have gotten emotionally damaged from the attack since he's not really socialized yet (too young) and wonder if it's possible for him to kill over from the stress.
He's hanging out in his cage right now, eyes closed, and not moving.  He turned a really dark brown all over and looked like he got black speckles on his neck.  breathing but kinda slowly for normal.
Is he just calming down or dieing?
If I keep trying to clean him off while he's brown, will it push him over the edge and stress him to death?

Re: Help for Juvinile Green Iguana!

Isnt there any vet you can call and ask?

http://i495.photobucket.com/albums/rr312/Bimbo_Collection/JPGIF/holysheep.gif I said shoot me if you really hate me and then he shot me in the head. I could see it all happen right before my eyes and I was lying down there dead. And the nightmares came over me again

Re: Help for Juvinile Green Iguana!

there might be one in town but all the clinics are closed, there isn't an ER for animals here and no body does house calls anymore.  So no but I would have done that immediatly if there were.

Re: Help for Juvinile Green Iguana!

Poor lizard sad My sister used to have an iguana, and I recall that it turned dark/brown whenever it was sick or unhealthy (and it was nearly black when it finally died). I would take it to a vet in the morning as soon as the clinics are open.

In the meantime, here is an iguana site that suggest what to do if they have a flesh wound: http://www.greenigsociety.org/injuries.htm. At this point, the most important thing is to make sure he doesn't get an infection- but handle him very gently to ensure he is not over-stressed. Let us know how it goes!

Re: Help for Juvinile Green Iguana!

I assume he's ok.  He finally turned bright green again a few hours later and andy got him cleaned up.  it was just a little knick and a few bruises and pin holes.  he's doing a lot of resting and gave me a good scare when I thought he was dead and not breathing but he popped with tail and scurried to his hide box while I recovered from the heart attack.

Infection is still worth watching out for and it might set his socializing back a ways but given a few more days and he should be back to himself.  smile

Re: Help for Juvinile Green Iguana!

little guy passed on this morning.  he was too weak but the time we realised he wasn't eatting or drinking.  Andy said that even though it looked like a tiny amount of blood loss it was a lot for him and that's what got him.

found out yesterday that the only certifed reptile vet in our area is over an hour and a half's drive from us and with us not haveing heat in the car he wouldn't have survived the trip any how due to temprature.

we had just decided on a name for him too.  "Lucky" because this was his thrid near-death experiance.  First we didn't think he could fit through the tiny hole at the top os his cage and found him in the window sill half dead from cold.  he was hyper again after an hour under his lamp.  Second he slipped through a hole in the screen the cats tore open and was pointed out too us by our worst mouser who hadn't caught much less killed anything ever in the three years we had him.  Then this one which counts since it wasn't the cat attack that got him so much as weakness and loss of will.

we might try again later when our oldest kid is in kindergarden and we can build a more secure cage with a plexiglass front, a bigger lamp, and older iguana that can defend itself if need be.  lol then we could go to the vet for the cats having their head cut open from a tail lashing.  justice.

Re: Help for Juvinile Green Iguana!

sad sad sad I'm so sorry to hear about that!

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of cage did you have for the iguana? My sister has had two (first was a 3-legged iguana, the second was a chinese water dragon). The iguana lived in a regular 15-25 (forgot) gallon aquarium-terrarium, with a nice heating rock, lamp, branches to climb, and water dish. We would put a heavy book or rock on top of the screen top to prevent him from escaping. The second lizard was spoiled and had a HUGE cage. My mom took an old bookcase/armoire, built a mesh front cover, with a smaller section being a mesh swinging door. It looked kind of like this, but with more space and a nice light inside, with paintings my artistic little sister made covering the walls: http://www.sophielynette.com/cage/armoire.jpg There was absolutely no escape path, and that little lizard had 6' of climbing space! If you or your husband are crafty, maybe this could be a home project for when you decide to get a new pet smile

Just stop getting pets. Seriously, you're a bad owner and I've told you this before. I get that you must be grieving, but just stop getting pets if you can't take care of them. For THEIR sake at least.

NOT my pet.  The iguana was his pet.  I was just feeding it.  FYI, he didn't even consult me when he got it.  Just showed up with it after work.  I'm not stupid enough to get a pet I know nothing about such as a reptile of any kind.  HE on the other hand used to breed bearded dragons and quit when we moved.  HE missed having a reptile and got the damned thing.  FYI number two, you don't know me and I only post about the pets I have a problem with {3 out of 7 pets, 6 now that the iguana's gone. and one of those problems was the iguana so it's just 2 that I want gone now.  both of which are dogs and both of which were HIS choices to take in.}  would you suggest I put both my kids up for adoption if I made a rough thread them and call me a bad parent?  I assume No so what's the difference by your definition?
FYI on that, I'm getting my tubes seared in early april BECAUSE I can't handle any more.
If "Just stop" is the best advise you can give, keep it.  I'll just return it in the end.  So not worth your effort to give it.

Tevunoth88:  Andy built it out of an old dresser.  The top two drawers were the cage itself and the top was done up like a trap door with a fixture built into it for the lamp.  The screens ran up both the front and the back, that's how he got out.  He jumped from the back screen to the curtain and then to the floor where the cat got him.  It looks like a really nice just got a few flaws like that one and the bare screens.  He wanted to put in a second fixture for a red lamp thingy, "night light" he called it, but it was too small and we couldn't find the right bulb in a smaller size.  He didn't want to put a heat rock in there because "iguana's don't have heat sensers in their underbellys and often burn themselves on the rock" so he let the saucer we put the food on be the rock since it gets hot under the lamp anyway and does the same thing for digestion as a heat rock.  We might put the cage up on Ebay since the bottom two drawers are still funtional.  IDK.

Re: Help for Juvinile Green Iguana!

So you want to put the blame on your husband, taking none for yourself? Yeah, I would expect nothing less. Just because your husband had some sort of back door reptile breeding business by no means should he have gotten an iguana which he and you obviously know jack shit about. You couldn't tell if your pet was dying or "calming down". And your iguana escaped its cage multiple times, wtf?! Buy it a proper cage, if you can't afford one or are not smart enough to make one, don't get an iguana.
That your husband just brings home pets without your knowledge is bullshit. Let's say it's not another, MULTIPLE excuse. Your husband is an idiot. You should be an advocate for those animals and give whatever animals he brings home back to the pet store or shelter he got them from. These animals would be better off without a home then dead in your's.
And obviously you are stupid enough to get a pet you know nothing about:

Also, I don't care what your tubes has to do with being a shitty pet owner.

Re: Help for Juvinile Green Iguana!

I have to agree with Alleux here. You need to tell your husband that under no circumstances are any more animals to enter your home. If you can't handle any more kids, you sure as hell can't handle more animals. Six animals sounds like enough for you.

The iguana got out on 3 separates occasions and was attacked by cats at least twice. You should learn what you can about the pets you have (the second your husband brought that iguana home and you agreed he could keep it, you should have looked up everything you could about having them as pets on the internet). AND you should have known the name, number, and location of your nearest reptile vet BEFORE something like this happened.

Don't blame the cats and say it's justice if they get a tail lashing from your next iguana (you don't need a next iguana, btw). It's you and your husband's fault the iguana was able to get out and the cats had access to him.

You have 6 pets, why isn't that enough?!!
