I tried to find the pictures of the things I'm talking about because I don't think I'm explaining myself that well :S
Okay, so I saw this bustier top in the sale and I quite like it. I tried it on but they had no sales assistants available when I was at the dept store today and I'm a bit confused because I've never worn that kind of top before. ![]()
The top is that purple one.
I planned to wear it with a skirt like this, I have it in black and a kinda peachy pink that I think would contrast nicely with the purple.![]()
Buuut what confuses me is the fit. I tried a 10 and a 12, with the 12 it was fine but it was a little loose. With the 10, it fit perfectly around my waist but the garment didn't really give much stretch and leeway, so when I put it on, the end effect was more like:![]()
but not as bad as that I think. On the site that sells it, it's not as booby on the model. I really love the top, it's slimming like crazy but I feel like Slutty McSlutterson with the whole cleavage thing. Anyway, I was saying earlier that I'm not used to this style and I'm not sure if it's supposed to be like that or if I can get away with it. What do you think? :S
I have a tan cardi I'd use for the pink skirt and a black one for the black skirt as a cover-up so I could do up all the top buttons if I wanted but I think that's a little odd.
Edited to make the pictures smaller

I think you should get the 12 and if the looseness bothers you, get it tailored. You can get things tailored pretty cheap. I think a size a little big is always better than a size a bit snug because you have more options and you aren't "stuck."
I think it'd look really pretty with a pink skirt or a black skirt. And like you said, you can always wear a cardigan if you feel too exposed, but I don't think that will be a huge issue since you'll be wearing a long/tea-length skirt.

Or eat a lot of cake until it fits

If the 10 fits you like that, it definitely doesn't fit you. The girl in that picture obviously isn't the size that the corset-type top is in that picture either... meaning it's waaaay toooo small. The 12 will draw the right kind of attention that goes well with the skirt as well. The skirt seems to be a bit "classy" so you will accentuate it with the right fitting top by going with the 12.
(I was a manager in women's specialty retail... sooo that is a sale's associate speaking)

I would get the bigger one, and maybe try wearing a belt to make the it more fitted?
