Urgh.
So my sister got a lovely mountain bike for her birthday, a proper professional top-quality one.
Last night, someone broke into our garden, cut the chain and nicked it.
It's not like it's a common bike or anything, it's a brand new model released only this year and there are very few in the UK never mind up where we are. My mum and dad saved so SO hard to give her something special, something she needed and wanted for her birthday.
I'm just so pissed off. This isn't the first time we've been done over although it hasn't happened in years.
Why do people feel the need to steal?
Offline
I'm sorry it got stolen
I can understand how pissed you are, so many things of my and my family got stolen (as much as a pointless thing like the car window sweeper).

Offline

Understandably pissed. Some people work very hard for what things they have, and someone thinks they can just go through live taking what the want. Ugh...I feel bad now. I hope you, by some miracle, get it back.

Offline

That sucks
Do you have a shed? If so it's probably best to put any future bikes in there so nobody sees it and thinks to take it.
We've had all sorts stolen from the garden over the years. My brother had a bike stolen the first time he ever forgot to put it in the shed, was just our luck
We've had wheelbarrows taken, spades, toys, someone once even stole my dads clothes from the washing line o.O
I guess people steal either because they're envious of something you have and want it for themselves or to make some money. All thieves are horrible but the ones who take things from peoples homes are the worst to me because they know they're stealing something personal.
Online
I think people steal for many reasons, usually to make money.
Report it stolen to the police immediately. They may find it at a pawn shop or something.
I also wouldn't leave things outside. I know it's your property and people shouldn't go on it, but I still don't leave things outside, especially the front yard. I won't even leave a jacket or shopping in the car. Actually I don't leave anything anywhere. I just assume that if it's not with me or properly locked up it may get stolen.

Aw man. My condolences.
Thieves always happen to take your most precious things, don't they? Either that or total crap nobody wants, but it sucks so hard when it's something you really love.
My Godmother had a break-in recently, where they took a roughed-up PC, an old as hell camera that nobody used... and a ring that has been passed down in her family for generations. Why is it always those things they take? A bike really sucks, especially an expensive, brand new gift. They probably saw it and thought "new, looks expensive, easy to sell".
Perhaps you could make "wanted" posters, with some kind of reward? I really hope things work out somehow!

Offline
That's so bad! Sorry to hear that!
I also think that using wanted posters can be a good idea, altough I don't think so that those would work as the bike costs a lot...

Argh people like that do not have a care in the world, do they?
.
Report it to the police, have you got warranty on the bike?
Online
Glossy brings up a good point. If you have a warranty, call the company who produced the bike and see if you could possibly, maybe get another one.

^ But you may need a police report to prove to the company that it was stolen.

Online
Oh true.
Do you guys have photos or anything of reference to show what the bike looks like?
Offline

Yeah. We've got photos, the original packaging and such, the frame number etc. The police were round to have a look. We're using facebook to spread it round our local area. There are some arseholes live round here, but not many would put up with theft from someone they know. And we're well known because my mum used to work at the school.
All we can do now is hope that it's found. The police have a tread taken from the front garden, as it was frosty and the footprint broke the grass.
It's not just that they trespassed, they broke into our back garden. I think that's the worst bit. If we'd left it in plain view then fine, fair game, it would have been our fault. But it wasn't. It was in the back garden, which is surrounded by a six foot high fence and houses either side, with a heavy solid wood gate. It was locked up with a combination bike lock.

Sounds like they either planned it or were desperate for whatever reason.

Creeper bike thief stalking your sister until you all were tucked into bed.

My kiddie picnic table, 2 bikes and an expensive barbeque were stolen a couple of years ago.
A couple of days later my parents went for a meal in a posh restaraunt close to where we live. They decided to eat outside and just so happened to come across our barbeque and picnic table.
WTF!

Argh, fucking bastard idiots. >:[
I'm not sure but people steal when they need or want something but can't afford it. Or maybe they had deal with your sister so they wanted a revenge?
Offline
People steal because:
- They are desperate (for money or the item itself)
- They are crazy
- They are on drugs (which = desperate and crazy)
Or they are just cold hearted dumbasses looking to make some extra cash or get a nice new bike.
I'm sorry someone stole from your family - I hate that feeling. I hope the police find the bike!

That sucks, Cora. I hope you get it back, although I know that seems unlikely. I know there are a bunch of biking forum websites, maybe you can post an alert on one of those with a picture of the bike and your area.
Having something stolen from your own home feels like such a violation. We found out the other night that one of the workmen that was in our home helping to redo our basement stole half of my dad's medication, which he really needs. What makes it worse is that my mom was always making lunch for the workers and my dad would always stop and buy fast food biscuits and stuff to bring the workers.

Let any second-hand shops/bike shops/pawn shops in the area know... my brother had a motorbike stolen a few years ago and called all the bike shops in town telling them, and with a description of the bike. He got a call later that day from the cops saying they had caught the thief, he had gone in and tried to sell the motorbike and the guy in the shop called the cops cos he knew it was my brother's.
I hope you get it back! That's so shitty

When we had a bike stolen from our garage in the middle of the day when we were home it was Pikies. We phoned the police and pointed them in the direction of the culprits but they told us there was nothing they could do.

I would be LIVID. My husband got his very expensive bike stolen a few years ago but don't feel too badly for him since he didn't lock it up properly and where it was locked made it very easy to steal. Still not fun though.
My husband also had his wallet stolen practically in front of our eyes back in 2007. We were at the public pool for an early morning adult swim. My husband and I are were the only people under 60 in the whole place. I didn't trust the lockers in the change rooms so I put my bag where I could see it (my bag had both our stuff in it).
Some asshole geriatric took off with the whole bag which held his wallet, our car keys and my husband's glasses. I am now very suspicious of old people. Luckily I found my bag stuffed in a random locker and they left the car keys and glasses behind but the whole wallet was gone.
It was a real leather wallet that his father gave him and he had a lucky coin he kept in there which had a lot of sentimental value. We had to get him all new ID (licence, health card, SIN card, credit card and bank card) and had to cancel all current accounts and cards. It was a pain in the ass.
In the end they only got away with $20 so that was the silver lining. It felt so violating. A few months later the thieving bastard actually rented a couple DVDs on our account at a local store. We put a watch on the account and a request to ask for ID from me (it was a man who took it so they couldn't use my husband's ID) before renting anything out.
Unfortunately the owner didn't remember what the guy looked like but it was a guy and he never came back. I hate thieves so much and I don't care what reason is behind it. If someone needs help I help them but don't steal from me.
