I want it romantic: like on the Eiffel tower or sunset at the beach. Totally romantic.

Online

I've been proposed to twice. The first was by a boyfriend I'd been dating for two years. I let him down gently and we went our separate ways. The other was when I worked as a support worker for adults with disabilities. We had one man who had sustained a brain injury and lost his sense of balance and the use of his right arm. He was all there mentally and communicated like a normal adult but through signals and blinking as he couldn't talk. When he discovered that I was moving to a different job, he became very upset and asked me to marry him and that he'd always loved me. It was really difficult because I knew after I left that place, I wouldn't be allowed to sustain my friendships with the people I had worked with. Obviously I didn't have the same feelings for the man, but we had become friends and he had always attempted to flirt with me. He was very sweet and he is one of the people I miss most from that job.
I know that my boyfriend wants to marry me some day in the future. We've been together for two years, which isn't really that long. We already live together. I think he'll probably wait a couple of years before popping the question. I'd like to be proposed to in a meadow under a big tree having one of our little picnics. That or just a simple date with the question somewhere in the middle. My boyfriend and I barely go out on dates anymore since we can't really afford much more than what we do, but it would be nice to do something sweet the night he proposed.
I don't think the proposal is all that important though. As long as he didn't askme in some dump or amongst stinking piles of trash (he's a refuse driver and deals with that everyday), I wouldn't care.

I've had a few different ideas or fantasies but in the end all that really matters is that we love each other.

I'd like to choose my own ring because while what sugarlicious said is a nice sentiment:

I know my boyfriend well enough to know that he is hopeless at that sort of thing
I am quite fussy about jewellery and I have seen a lot of engagement rings that I wouldn't like at all!
I would like the proposal to be a surprise though, and having the ring at the proposal would be great, but there's no way for that to work out, haha.
Sometimes I think about a public proposal but in all honesty we are very introverted and would both die of embarrassment I think. So it'd have to be at least semi private. I don't think I'd want him to kneel down because that would also be embarrassing even if there was no one else there! But I'd like some sort of big deal made, location wise - somewhere beautiful and/or special, not just in our house or something - and you know at least take my hands and look into my eyes - I can totally picture my boyfriend copping out with "So d'ya wanna get married?" as an aside while doing something totally mundane. I suppose if he does that we can then go ring shopping and I can force him to give me a proper proposal later.
Up until recently he was totally not keen on the idea of marriage, so I was starting to think this would never happen for me, but he found out (from a friend - I had already told him but he never listens to me!) that he will save some tax money if he's married, so I think he is considering it now.

Exactly. I'm really picky about rings because I've never been much into wearing them (or any jewelry for that matter) so there was no way for me to really articulate what I would like so he'd know and understand what I wanted.

Yeah, I don't even own any rings yet so he can't look at those to get ideas, for example. (Never mind to know what size to get!)

This!
And I agree with those who want a private engagement. I'd run too if it was something like this:

My boyfriend has a peice of paper in his room with my ring size and a description of my dream ring on it, he's had it since we were together just a few months
I didn't go describing my dream ring to him haha, he just showed me some pictures and took notes of what I said I liked. So I know he won't go wrong!
I'd like to be proposed to in private too. Preferably somewhere pretty, but I don't really mind. If he did it somewhere cliche I would be like ugh no
I don't think he would though, he knows me haha! I know he wants to do a big grand gesture propsal thing but to be honest I don't even know if it'd come to that, we've known for years that we are gonna end up married so meh, I don't see engagement as that big a deal so I don't really mind.

Unless I plan to wait until marriage again. God, I'm indecisive.
I would like my engagement ring to be from Tiffany's, not that I would say "no" if it's from People's or something. I just have "expensive" taste, without even knowing the price or designer. But I'm a big couponer. I used to have a binder of coupons, t'was crazy. So, I'll just save a lot on groceries and make up. It'll balance out. ^_^I'll just use coupons so I can have a ring from Tiffany's... I find that hysterical. They dooo have a finance plan.
Huh? What? I won't use coupons for Tiffany's or so I can save on some stuff and then get a ring from Tiffany's or so we can afford it. He will be able to afford it. I was just pointing out that I'm good with other stuff such as groceries and makeup because I coupon and save a lot of money.

Lol...
I'd hate for my partner to spend anymore than £100 at the very most on a ring. It would have to be the most exceptional ring I've ever seen in order for me to even consider allowing him to throw that much money away on a chunk of silver and stone. Thankfully he knows this and even though he'd like to spend more, he wouldn't. He knows how awkward it would make me feel.
But then, I live a normal life with a normal income.

I pretty much don't care about the ring. But I DON'T want gold. I kinda hate gold and golden jewerly.
Anyway, since I wanna be an English teacher, it would be really wonderful if he would come to see me in the lunch time or something and he would simply kneel to the ground and propose. In the corridor, in front of everyone, like he wouldn't care.

This is what I did for my brother and his fiancee and I hope that my future husband will to something like this for me. As for the ring, I really hope that he will go with my sister to choose it, because she knows what I like and I don't want to see my ring before he proposes
