This may sound a little odd, but I've always felt some sort of odd bond towards Judaism. I'm an atheist, but I strongly feel that if I had to choose a religion I would become Jewish. As far as I know there is no Jewish blood in my family and no other explanation I can think of for my feelings. It would appear I'm not the only person in my family that feels this way though. It's rather odd.
One of my friends is Jewish and we were discussing the impact of World War 2 on her family, due to it being the Holocaust memorial day that day. Another girl sat with us had no idea what the Holocaust was and seemed not to care either. Me and my friend were both so angry about it, as we feel that this isn't something that should just be forgotten or swept under the carpet. Especially as we live in a time where information couldn't be easier to access. (Sorry for bringing a sad mood to this thread, I was just so shocked and wanted to know if any of you have ever had encounters with people who are so terribly ignorant towards such a big part of history - history that not only relates to one religion, but to the whole world. History which is actually fairly recent in the grand scheme of things. Please don't feel you have to answer this if you don't want to)
It's interesting that you say you feel that connection with Judaism- I've met several devout atheists who say that if they were forced to pick a religion, they'd choose Judaism. Do you think it's because they do not try to proselytize? It's a bit less "religion-y" than other religions, in that there is such a huge cultural and historical part to it. In fact, many people with Jewish ancestry will identify as "Jewish" even if they are completely secular, agnostic or even atheist.
I personally have not met anyone who hasn't at least heard of the Holocaust (partially due to the mandatory readings of books like "Night" or the Diary of Anne Frank). However, I Have met a LOT of people who are very ignorant of what exactly happened, or who fail to understand it. A lot of people seem to have the idea of "oh, it happened a long time ago, we should stop talking about it". They seem to forget the wise saying Those who fail to learn history are doomed to repeat it. People today are far too quick to condemn certain things as genocide (PETA even, which I find offensive) without having any idea what it means. Many others seem to see it as purely something to joke about. Sadly, that is something that I have found to be quite common amongst some users here.
And absolutely no need to worry about asking me (or anyone else) anything here
I feel that lack of knowledge is the root of so many problems amongst people now, and am happy to discuss anything and everything pertaining to Judaism (religion, politics, culture, history or Israel) in a civil manner

I think the lack of preaching helps. I have friends who are Christian, and constantly tell me I need god in my life, which makes me feel quite offended and thus, I don't think I would ever end up being Christian. I think the huge amount of history and culture is really interesting too, I guess it intrigues me.
It's strange, I don't think it's mandatory for those books to be read here, although one of the main things on the history curriculum for 14-15 year olds (or an age group similar to that) is the Holocaust. I think my history teacher at the time taught it so well that most of my class ended up in tears at it. See, to me it didn't happen all that long ago, in terms of the history of the world it is fairly recent and many people still have grandparents and parents even who were alive at that time. I think genocide needs to be defined properly and people should be more careful how they use the term. I too have seen people make jokes about this before both around here and elsewhere, quite frankly it just makes me sad.
Thank you so much for answering me honestly, I really appreciate your openness towards all of this. I can only agree with ignorance causing too many problems, I wish people had the same drive for finding information as I do. I shall have to have a think and see if I have any more questions - I'm sure some will pop up soon enough.

Rose you wrote the totally wrong thing and i was going to attack you with it. but since you are my friend let me make it clear.
Jesus is the Christians/Catholic's God. Moses is the God of Jews.
But what we Muslims believe there is one God which is Allah and we believe Musa (Moses) S.A. and Isa (Jesus) S.A. as our Prophets and the Messengers of Allah.
We respect them not as a God but as a Prophet and Messenger of Allah. And Rose to make it clear - we Muslims never believed/never will believe that Moses or Jesus is our God. And I hope you respect the fact that Jesus is not our God.
If anyone has felt insulted or offended please accept my apologies. And I'm really sorry that I'm hi-jacking this thread which is for Jews but i just needed to quote that line. Sorry again. No, you are wrong. Both Christians and Jews believe in one God, and this God happens to be the God of Abraham in all cases, just Christians believe Jesus was a Messiah and God and Muslims believe he was just a prophet, and that Muhammad was the last prophet.
oh really? well i'm sorry that i wrote wrong. but i wanted to say - The God of Christians/Catholics/Jew's are not our God.
No need to say sorry. Your right. [b] We do have 3 different gods.Im not muslim but, i do believe in [b] Allah.
I've learn everything about this
I agree whit you

Who shouldn't say sorry for what? If you were talking about cute_pink, no she didn't need to apologize. But her views on Judaism (and Christianity) are both VERY wrong and misinformed. I believe she has since been corrected and understands it now. I believe that the G-ds of all three Abrahamic faiths are the same, just worshiped differently and called by different names. Both Islam and Christianity originated from Judaism, after all. The New Testament of Christianity is a continuation of Jewish texts (Tanakh), and the Qur'an contains parts (if not all? Correct me if I'm wrong) of those sacred texts of Judaism as well as Christianity. They talk about the same G-d. Our styles of worship, and interpretation of that G-d are just different.
I hate it when people act like the 3 interpretations of G-d are different Beings entirely. That implies that only one religion is right, and that the others are wrong. That is the [b]WORST attitude to have. The purpose of religion should be for self-fulfillment and to make you a better person. It should not be a competition of who has "the best G-d", fighting, wars, and trying to convert or "save" others. If you want peace, you need to acknowledge the fact that we are all essentially worshiping the same being. Just in different ways.
