Awkward Body Shapes

I have an extreme hourglass shaped body.

And I don't know how to dress it.

My body shape is perhaps best illustrated by my corset pictures. The size of my waist doesn't change when I have my corset on.

I'm also petite as well, only 5'2".

So, how can I dress a petite extreme hourglass?

Re: Awkward Body Shapes

Well, first off, you are very lucky to have such a sweet body! ^-^
From seeing your posts around, you're pretty into vintage, no? The cuts of those dresses are usually very flattering on your body shape. It would especially work out if you like the styling anyways.
I'm pretty slightly hour glass, and I like to wear high waisted skirts, which as I see it, are very in style right now. hmm
Umm, I also like fitted capris, because I think they suit curvier hips. Plus they're casual.
I would just say to avoid shirts that hang down without attending to your curves. Waistlines on the shirts is also a big factor.. You'd have to experiment to see where you like the waistline to fall, since I'm not sure if you want more or less out of your curve. But I think it's definately a great body shape to have!

Re: Awkward Body Shapes

I certainly want less... When I wear things with really small waists or belts it looks like I'm physically bringing my waist in with them, the difference is so extreme because of my height.

I do wear high-waisted skirts. In fact, I bought one today, and it looks great. It's for work.

I wear a lot of empire lines, because my breasts are big enough, and my chest narrow enough, to pull them off.

When I buy vintage, I often have to bring the hems up, as they're too tall for me hmm

Re: Awkward Body Shapes

I have the same problem as you Corazie, I'm a size 12-14 (uk) and I'm 5"1...My waist is 12 inches smaller than my hips. If I wear anything that fits around my 8-10 waist, it makes my hips look massive...Most clothes now are made for people with a straight up and down body....Buy vintage...Its made for shapely women. Try something like "age-concern vintage" Its simply amazing...sure its second hand, but if you wash it its no problem. You could also try www.modcloth.com I've never had a problem getting clothes from them, you have to wait a while for things to arrive, but they send free stuff, so I guess it makes up for it.

Re: Awkward Body Shapes

You should be proud of your body type. I know people who will envy you!! Looking at the fashion history shows us that most  women in the past made huge efforts to outstand their waist, and make their hips look bigger. At least in latin culture, most people has that type of body. I´m kind of skinny, I don´t have shape =/  and my waist doesn´t outstands at all, plus I´m so petite...

Quick call Stacy and Clinton. big_smile
I have the same problem but I'm not as short. A lot of things end up making me look boxed shaped. I have to buy my pants to go over my hips then they are like two inches to big around the tummy. Grrrr.

Re: Awkward Body Shapes

Girl We Must Be Twins LoL {Gemini} Well you have an hour glass figure and i know i use it to my advantage, im still growing so im not expected to stay 5"2 but while im there im using it to my advantage. First of all jeans look beautiful with a nice pair of high heels corsets aren't always the best because the shortness they give the upper half of our bodies, short sleeved shorts that can be long or short look nice on us.

Re: Awkward Body Shapes

Yes, thats me. I'm an extreme pear shape - tiny, bony chest and shoulders and a 28 inch waist, then a 40 inch hip measurment, and I'm very long in the top half, with shorter legs (I'm around 5"6).NOTHING fits me. I have kind of just gotten used to the fact that no matter how I dress, my bum will look big (I just make sure I keep in shape so it's a nice bum, not a blob hehe). My wardrobe is mostly dresses with a high neck and a loose waist that I belt in, and plenty of heels.

Like previous posts, shopping vintage is the best option, considering clothing was made for womanly shapes, and the fabric is usually sumptous and sturdy, rather than the cheap stuff you find in mass production today.

And are you a confident sewer? If not, it could be worth doing a community course somewhere, because nothing is better than designing and wearing something you've made yourself, and something that fits.
