I was a bit disappointed... Maybe just because I was a big fan of Alice books ever since I was a kid and I was expecting to much from it (It was Disney/family cinema in the end). However I enjoyed the film and had a good time ,but this film is not going to my favourites list.
Also as someone before me mentioned I have seen every Alice film there ever was ,and some are far better then Burton's work.
hehe don't tell me that i haven't seen it yet!!!!
I love the Alice in Wonderland /through the looking glass books. I have a beautiful hard cover copy with the original illustrations.
I've seen many different version of Alice over the years. I think the most horrible was one with Kate Beckingsale.
My favorite is a 1983 version that was put out by PBS, starring Richard Burton and his daughter. Nathan Lane is the doormouse. The movie has it's faults, however the singing is fantastic. I particularly like the songs done by whoever played Tweedledum and TweedleDee.
I do get very peeved about how a lot of the movies are mish-moshes of Alice in Wonderland and Alice Through the Looking Glass. They are two separate books and I would really like to see someone do a version that is true to one book and not combine them.

It...was a movie.
The actors were great, the costumes were amazing. So on and so forth. But the plot was VERY disappointing.
They seemed to lessen any time with other characters to make time for the Mad Hatter and maybe even, though not as disappointing, the 'this-is-so-totally-not-the-queen-of hearts' Red Queen. I feel this was probably because they are some of the more marketed, well known characters. Everyone knows the Mad Hatter, but only people who have bothered to read a book would know who the White Queen and Jabberwock were.
The perfect screen time for any character was the Chesire Cat. He was there when actually needed, but wasn't giving prolonged dialouge or backstory.
I love Tim Burton, but this totally missed the mark. Not by much, though.
Burton's more recent film remakes started out all well and good with the Chocolate Factory. Sweeny Todd was more of an abridged version of the musical. And now this...adaption of Alice in 'Underland' (what the hell was with that?), when oh when is he going to start making original stuff again?

Kate Beckingsale... Indeed, I got it on dvd some years ago from my mom ,and I didn't know if I should laugh or cry while watching that version.
1983 Alice in Wonderland is my favourite too as well as this one version I've seen as a kid on tv but I can't figure out by who it was right now. I only remember Alice was played by a little, brown-haired girl.
As for the books ,I don't think we will ever get to see the story in a film the way the books portray it.
