Hi guysWanted to ask you some advice on my first pose. I know where I did tweaking and stuff is quite obvious, I'm working hard to fix it.
Also, don't have the big black shadow, as Blsk says it can be hard to see where to draw
lol I know- i think I got a bit carried away with that
Was wondering if someone could also help me out with the lighting of an outfit?

Sure! I can. Just send me a photo of one of your outfits, and i'll show you where light is supposed to go.
Just pm me! Since there's a bug and we can't comment

Edit looks good. As you said, only that shear layer looks weird.
I usually make them in this way. I create three layers in this order from top down:
1) lines of shear parts of outfit
2) shadows
3) color for shear parts of outfit.
Then I set lower opacity settings for these layers. Depends on the color, but usually it is something about 75-80% for lines (layer 1) and 60-70% for color and shadow (layers 2 and 3).
The important part is that line layer has to bemore visible than color. If you put opacity the same for all three layers, shear will not have defined edge.
And this is the result for example:
Sorry for bad English. Typed in a hurry. Hope you understand.

I'll show you what it will look like if you to shade
Just wait a moment, working on your edit
Here it is.

Do you see the difference?
Also remember, do not smudge so much that you cannot see the outline. The outline has to be crisp. Not smudged or it will not look so great.

I have the same obsession hon.. a tip I can give you is to select your dress/outift before you blur then when you blur you will not get the fuzzy edges and it will look more crisp. :0)

these tips are amazing, thanks!
I was wondering how you guys do the black line under the boobs - mine always looks horrible for some reason
Btw I use Gimp.
Also, when I make a dress, after shading & highlighting etc. I don't know what to do next - so I end up with a boring plain dress...
(Sorry, my editing is rubbish
Any tips on how to improve are welcome
)

I've tried patterns, but I don't know how you would shade them...

Try the pen tool
My gimp isn't working for some reason at the moment so i'll have to tell you by typing instead of pictures
~Pen Tool~
You can either draw your own curve or just make two points on either side of the boob. A straight line should appear. Click and drag it into the curve shape
As for the next point, have you tried maybe putting a belt on her? Or using some brushes or textures?
If using textures, google a picture of something relatively easy like red silk/denim etc
When you finish coloring the dress and before the shading/highlighting etc, select the dress, right click, paste as, new layer. Select invert and erase. Now the texture is on the dress

Great advice Neriah.
As for Gimp brushes, you have beautiful ones at deviantart. Here is the link:
http://browse.deviantart.com/resources/ … mpbrushes/
You can always use on edge of skirt or top or on some part of the outfit to make it look not too plain...
Here is an example:

As you can notice I added some flowers with custom brush on upper and bottom part of her skirt. Also with some sparkle brush I added dots to her underskirt, so it doesn't look too plain.
You can also always try to draw some details by yourself. Here is a good tutorial and idea how to do it: http://hellobaby.deviantart.com/art/How … t-82319130
And also you can sometimes change edges of your outfit. They don't have to be straight you know.
Here is a great tutorial explaining how to easily draw lace on edge:

I hope that we gave you a couple of ideas.
