Hi i have been editing for a little while now i know how to use layers and stuff but im wondering if im using them propperly. What are clipping or clipping masks?? how do you use them.

I use Gimp, and Paint.net

I have them too in Adobe Fireworks, and honestly I don't think you need them. Well, I don't use them and I don't know what they do  lol So your edits should be OK.

okay so I use Adobe photoshop Elements and to recolour clothes I use "Enhance>Colour>Hue/Saturation..." but I can`t recolour to a specific colour for hair or poses, so is there a way or doing this? or is there a way of finding the lightness of a colour because I can put the Hue and saturation right but the lightness bar is just a guess so its not perfect. help?

Clipping mask in Photoshop is created when you hold the Alt key on keyboard and put your mouse cursor on the line dividing the two layers and click.

Clipping mask is a great way to ensure that shadows will be only on clothes not on the background.
For example if you have a yellow ball layer and grey shadow layer:

As I said this is in Photoshop.
I think that Gimp and Paint.Net don't have this feature. sad

I just change the transparency in Fireworks. It should be the same in GIMP. Don't make it too dark but not too light at the same time and add shadows and highlights smile If you need any more help just post here big_smile

i have not done any mb editing yet(thinking i should start tho smile) but i do use photoshop to create graphic art,and i just wanted to let every1 kno that not all the time but alot of the time you can find a free 30 day downloadable  trial available from Adobe's official website!!! its usually not the very newest latest version but hey its free!!
