Tip 1 - The best thing to do is always put stuff into a new layer, and name them (that helps greatly!)

Hiya,
I just want to say that anyone that uses Photoshop,Gimp or PSP or any other program, can absolutely feel free to ask me questions. I know a quite a lot good tips and other stuff in Photoshop but all programs are pretty much similar to it..so yeah ;D

Here are some tips ;D
Hopefully they'll help you, even a little bit lol
~ Pen tool is a great tool to edit, seriously. I use it all the time..
Here's a tutorial on Pen tool> http://www.tutcast.com/pen-tool-in-depth/
~ Do the shading on new layers. Or clipping masks.
~ As for the above^, you should make each design etc in white. [1] If you use clipping masks to do the shading, then you can do the the base design in absolute white[#FFFFFF] [2] If not, don't use the exact white color^. Use something like #f1f1f1 for the base color, and #dedede for stroking. And later on you could change the color by putting 'Color Overlay' with 'Linear Burn' blend mode, in the Layer Style.
~ A good thing would be to save PSD files of all your edits. So that you could actually use them again etc
~ Experiment with shading! Try different techniques and choose what's best for you and looks good.
~ Enter many Edit Contests! You'll get better each time.
~ If you're really good at drawing in real life, you could also buy a Graphics Tablet/Pad. It might help you making better edits. But you don't have to,really-because you can do everything with a mouse, with a practice of course

Agreed! Also be sure to check out the properties of the layer, there's a lot of neat stuff you can do with the blending, such as multiply, color burn and glow

hehe.. But seriously,it's easy.. just do all the shading in a new layer.. nothing hard or anything ;D

The layers is a good thing because it means you don't have to re-draw around the dress colour
And as Laumini said, put the shadow and highlight in new layers. It will far much easier and there will be much less hassle.

Yep,that's true ;D
And you can always re-do the shading if you don't like it,this way ;D

Yeah that's what always do, and for my shadows I:
Do it in a seperate layer, then use a colour darker than the one your using and then use 'Gaussian Blur' - makes it blend far much better.
Also, I find it easier to to do everything in black - outline in black and the colours in a dark gray etc then I select everything I've made (not the pose!
) then I change it in 'Adjust Colour.' I mess about until I get a nice colour.

haha, I do a similar thing.. well-I did.. but anyways..
I choose a color, any shade of gray, change the blend mode to 'Multiply'. And then I do all the shading ;D For Highlights,if needed,I put either 'Overlay' or 'Soft Light'
If something is too bright/dark-I brighten/darken up the color with the Brightness/Contrast option

I absolutely agree. That is the best tip.
I make separate layer for:
1) line (border)
2) higlight
3) shadow
4) basic color
(in this order)
And I do that for every color of the outfit. (yeah I know LOTS of layers).
But totally worth it.
And here is another trick that makes my editing easier.
I create shadows layer and highlight layer as clipping masks of color layer. That ways I don't have to worry that they will peek outside color.
I use Photoshop and don't know if other programs have this option though.

Lucky you
I usually do a 1st layer for the outline. Then, I'll create a new layer for the colour - after I've did this I'll choose the colour and colour over the whole shape (sometimes crazily
) so it'll cover everything. After that I drag the second layer behind the 1st layer so I know can see the layer. I get the rubber tool and very tediously will rub out the outside of the of the outline so the colour is only in the outline.
I then get the darker colour, add a new layer and add shadows then do what I did before - drag that layer behind the outline BUT BEFORE the colour layer. And I do the same for the higlights etc.

Ok you win.
I guess you use colour layers for shading.
I use hue/saturation layer and when I draw on them with different opacity set for a brush, different tone of colour appears.
You can find great tutorial for them on:

Not exactly.
A have only 1 color layer, and layers of shadows and highlights. I do the shading differently,as you see... I choose a gray color, put the blend mode to multiply and do draw the shading wherever I want. And do that again, again and again, lol
Here's an example of the layers tab I have after I did a design..In this case I had 6 shadow layers..didn't want to make a bigger SSs ;D

I have a basic dress tutorial on my blog, but it's for paint.net, I don't know if that would help you or not

I pretty much do the same thing with paint.net, while I'm editing I have tons of layers, but it's worth it in the end

This is above all the best advise.. put everything new in a layer that way if it looks wrong you can delete the layer and start over.
I edit using PSP8 I love it..
*Layers
*Gaussian Blur
*Layer effects(multiply, screen, blur, difference, soft and hard light)
*Smudge brush
These are the things I use the most in my editing.
I am always open to help out and give advise especially using PSP.. PM me with any questions you may have
