I struggled with where to put this. Originally I was going to shove it in Entertainment, but the threads there seem to consist of post after post of "OhEmmGEE! I love them, like, so much, too!1". That's not the conversation I wanted to inspire. I wanted to start a collection of all of our favorite women musicians that remind you that self respect is okay. This seems to be the section that is plagued with the worry and self-doubt, so I figured it would be okay to put it here.

I think we've all established that women are largely viewed as sex objects in the media that need to constantly be skinny, pretty, clean, and most of all, totally dependent on men for these things. Hey. Guess what? You don't. I'm tired of having to tell girls here that no, you don't need a boyfriend. Yeah, it's fine to tell him you don't need to have sex. You're normal. You're normal. You're normal. If we build up a good database of artists that make us feel good, I'm hoping I can stop having that argument some. Or at least just start linking them to this thread.

I'll start with Kate Nash's "Merry Happy", as it is the only one I found of hers that I love that also has suitable language. It's a breakup song that not once implies that she wants or needs him back.

The official video wouldn't allow embedding, sorry. You have to deal with a slideshow if you're lazy.

I'm on the fence about Pink, honestly. Sometimes her 'strong woman' thing just seems too forced..kind of like how Avril Lavigne was pushing her 'punk rock'. I do own Mizzundastood, and think 'Respect' is a good one, but I couldn't find a good video for that song. If anybody else does, they can post it.

And I understand that 'Single Ladies' is supposed to be some sort of anthem for single girls, but I just don't feel it. The idea of the song is based on the fact that somebody else wants her now, and the ex is jealous. I always took 'if you liked it' to mean the sex, giving her no worth other than that. But she can move her hips ways I didn't think possible, so if that's all she has to offer it is sort of an accomplishment. blebl

Actually, if she liked him so much to care that he's jealous of a club guy, why didn't she put a ring on him?

I was actually debating starting with Regina Spektor or Bjork last night, I just couldn't choose a song. But since you already brought them up, I'll just stick my favorites on here.

Oh yeah, I don't think being sexual is a problem at all. I just think that most of women's sexuality in the media is a gross parody of actual sexuality. Post She Wolf, if it makes you feel awesome. I actually haven't given that one a listen yet.

One of my friends had to be taught how you're supposed to sing the chorus. "No, you just mime a gun. You don't make the noises." I guess if you make the noises you aren't wrong. Just weird and making silly noises.

That Yeah Yeah Yeahs video is one of the cutest things I have ever seen, by the way. My only real exposure to them was Where The Wild Things Are. I love the shots of her silhouette dancing. It makes me want to wear my shiny tights and dance with her. I might. Nobody will be home for a little while.

The Freshlyground video definitely counts. It portrays a relationship how it's supposed to be, both people making equal compromises. I'd never heard of them before.

Because Nico was an amazing woman. She wasn't just a model, but her work as singer-songwriter influenced a lot of bands (Siouxsie and the banshees, joy division, leonhard cohen, bauhaus etc.). I can understand the heroin story doesn't put her in a good light, but she was a pioneer of dark wave and gothic, a good actress and not just a pretty dolly.

And I really don't mean to argue with half of the things posted, but I do find it super ironic that the India Arie song posted reiterates that she isn't a supermodel while she's parading around in a belly shirt. A belly shirt that looks freaking awesome on her, because she's a hot lady. Why isn't she a supermodel or a video girl? She's pretty and obviously works on being pretty.

Patti Smith is often called the godmother of punk. Her album Horses went on to inspire bands such as R.E.M, U2 and Clash.
And Sonic Youth is credited as influencing the grunge movement.
