I struggled with where to put this. Originally I was going to shove it in Entertainment, but the threads there seem to consist of post after post of "OhEmmGEE! I love them, like, so much, too!1". That's not the conversation I wanted to inspire. I wanted to start a collection of all of our favorite women musicians that remind you that self respect is okay. This seems to be the section that is plagued with the worry and self-doubt, so I figured it would be okay to put it here.
I think we've all established that women are largely viewed as sex objects in the media that need to constantly be skinny, pretty, clean, and most of all, totally dependent on men for these things. Hey. Guess what? You don't. I'm tired of having to tell girls here that no, you don't need a boyfriend. Yeah, it's fine to tell him you don't need to have sex. You're normal. You're normal. You're normal. If we build up a good database of artists that make us feel good, I'm hoping I can stop having that argument some. Or at least just start linking them to this thread.
I'll start with Kate Nash's "Merry Happy", as it is the only one I found of hers that I love that also has suitable language. It's a breakup song that not once implies that she wants or needs him back.

beyonce. the first thing that came to mind.
hmm, single ladies? just a thought.
well i thought beyonce because let just say it..she's not a twig - and it doesn't look like she cares. ..is that the right way to put it?? i don't know how to get my point across but yeah =S
I take pride in being unique and different. I can't stand girls who look the same as the one standing next to them. All my favourite bands, artists, books and movies are on my AM page.

hah, go pink

I'm on the fence about Pink, honestly. Sometimes her 'strong woman' thing just seems too forced..kind of like how Avril Lavigne was pushing her 'punk rock'. I do own Mizzundastood, and think 'Respect' is a good one, but I couldn't find a good video for that song. If anybody else does, they can post it.
And I understand that 'Single Ladies' is supposed to be some sort of anthem for single girls, but I just don't feel it. The idea of the song is based on the fact that somebody else wants her now, and the ex is jealous. I always took 'if you liked it' to mean the sex, giving her no worth other than that. But she can move her hips ways I didn't think possible, so if that's all she has to offer it is sort of an accomplishment.
Actually, if she liked him so much to care that he's jealous of a club guy, why didn't she put a ring on him?

i see your point.

Don't know if this qualifies for your thread, the singer is part of a group and there's a line that goes "I could say I need you
I need you every day and every hour" but I still think all in all this song is just so sweet.

Shania Twain. Can't come up with the links now, but lots of her songs are basically telling you women are great. Like "She's not just a pretty face" or "In my car (I'll be the driver)".

I was actually debating starting with Regina Spektor or Bjork last night, I just couldn't choose a song. But since you already brought them up, I'll just stick my favorites on here.

I dont think a woman being sexuall is ahuge problem after all we do have sexual urges and I like Shakira's song She Wolf. Because she is the one in control calling the shots.
I like this idea tho!

Oh yeah, I don't think being sexual is a problem at all. I just think that most of women's sexuality in the media is a gross parody of actual sexuality. Post She Wolf, if it makes you feel awesome. I actually haven't given that one a listen yet.

This is a great thread!

I think that this song gives you a better idea of Tori Amos. 'Cornflake Girl' gets a little hard to follow.

I'd have to say natalie horler (singer of cascada) - dont really like the music honestly but she's just won of those singers which actually has a good voice AND isnt stick thin! Respect her XD

I'm kind of confused as to why you included Nico, though. She can sing, yeah. But I always thought she was more of a pretty face than anything else. The whole..horrible addiction to heroin thing is sort of a turn off for me.
Because Nico was an amazing woman. She wasn't just a model, but her work as singer-songwriter influenced a lot of bands (Siouxsie and the banshees, joy division, leonhard cohen, bauhaus etc.). I can understand the heroin story doesn't put her in a good light, but she was a pioneer of dark wave and gothic, a good actress and not just a pretty dolly.

What's something she actually wrote? I think everything I found was something that had been written for her.
ETA: I'm not denying that she wrote things. I just honestly don't know what.

Her whole debut album was great, i like that she doesnt put men down but acknowledges that we need to respect each other.

If the video allows embedding on youtube, the youtube tags are just You stick the direct link in there.

Can I nominate Patti Smith and Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth?
Patti Smith is often called the godmother of punk. Her album Horses went on to inspire bands such as R.E.M, U2 and Clash.
And Sonic Youth is credited as influencing the grunge movement.
I think they're both legends on their own right. And they do it without acting all sexy.
