I simply LOVE this book series. It is one of the best I have read in a long time. If you want something to get lost in, then this is the book series for you.
The Black Magician Trilogy is by Trudi Canavan.
The Books
Book 1: The Magicians' Guild
Each year, the magicians of Imardin gather together to purge the city streets of vagrants and miscreants. Masters of the disciplines of magic, they know that no ordinary lowlife can oppose them. But their protective shield is not as imprenetrable as they think.
Sonea, angry, frustrated and outraged by the treatment of her family and friends, throws a stone at the shield, putting all her rage behind it. She is amazed when it sails unrestricted through the barrier and knocks a magician unconscious.
The Guild's worst fear has been realised . there is an untrained magician loose in Imardin who must be found before her uncontrolled powers can destroy herself and the city.
Book 2: The Novice
Sonea knows the other novices in the Magicians' Guild all come from powerful families, but she also knows she can turn to Rothen and Dannyl for help when she needs it. That is, until somone starts spreading malicious rumouts about her — and Akkarin, The High Lord, steps in.
Promoted to Guild Ambassador, Lord Dannyl leaves for the Elyne court. His first order from Administrator Lorlen is to resume, in secret, High Lord Akkarin's long-abandoned research into ancient magical knowledge. Not knowing the true reason for his journey, Dannyl is soon facing unexpected dangers.
Meanwhile, Sonea has almost forgotten the High Lord's dark secret, but keeping the truth hidden may be a grave mistake.
Book 3: The High Lord
Sonea has learnt much in the Magicians' Guild. Over the past year, Regin has come to ignore her and the other novices treat her with a grudging respect. But she can never forget what she witnessed in High Lord Akkarin's underground room, or his warning that Kyralia's ancient enemy is watching the Guild closely.
Her old friend Cery now has an influencial position among the Thieves, and good connections in high and low places. When an exotic stranger offers to help him with a secret task, Cery knows he should refuse, but then . . .
As Akkarin reveals more of his knowledge, Sonea does not know who to believe, or what she most fears. Could the truth be as terrifying as the High Lord claims? Or is he trying to trick her into assisting him with his dark schemes?
What is your favourite? Why?
My favourite out of the trilogy is The Novice, though it's a really hard decision. I just love how everything changes for Sonea, again and again. The ups and downs are fantastic.
Do you like any of Trudi Canavan's other books?
I love Age of Five Trilogy and I can't wait to get my hands on The Magician1s Apprentice. It's too expensive (only in hardback) at the moment, so I'm waiting for the paperback
If you haven't read the books, or are half way through, then be warned that there may be spoilers.

I've never heard of them, but they say they're really good.
I might read them someday

I read them, and I LOVE them. Those books are not like twilight crap - from where I actually like ONE character - those books are much better. Better written, better plot, better characters.
My favourite is Akkarin. I imagine him as someone really hot. ^^ Plus, he's "bad". That's why I like "The Great Lord" the most. There's just a lot of Akkarin.
I also read first book from Age of Five, and it was also great. I usually read books, when I don't have to go to school, so I'm going to read next one next to christmas tree.
I even have whole Black Magicians Trilogy on my bookshelf. And it's weird, because I hated reading books before.

Akkarin does seem SO HOT.
Tall, dark, handsome... Mmmm!
I'm reading The Magician's Apprentice right now, the prequel. I'm whizzing through it. It's really good, it explains a lot about Sachaka and the Magician's Guild and Higher Magic

I want to read that. I was in the shop, and about to buy The Magician's Apprentice, but I saw Priestess of the White - end left the shop with this one. I thought that the story about Sachaka, Guild and Higher Magic wouldn't be the same without Akkarin. xD
SPOILER
You know that feeling, when your favourite character dies, right? It's awful.
Especially when your cousin is watching you, so you can't let a single tear drop.

I just let it flow
Magician's Apprentice was so/so.
I did read it, but I can't really remember much.
My memories of it are rather vague, the plot wasn't as strong.

I didn't mind Magician's Apprentice... tho I missed Sonea and definitely missed Akkarin in the story...
I bought the first of these books years ago at a second-hand book shop... I had to go out and buy the next two the next day... I cry every time when I get to the end of the High Lord...
It's probably time I re-read these books...
I must admit though - wasn't a fan of the Age of Five Trilogy - just didn't have the same magic about it...

The high lord: cuz here is the real plot with the action and the relations between characters get more intense. The end was indeed pretty sad.
