Regardless of whether you believe in mystical things, do you not have any people in your life that just seem to suck the energy right out of you?  Friends you've grown apart from or family members who come to you to tell you all of the bad stuff that is going on in their lives, making you feel negative and never leaving anything positive behind?   People who are nice enough that you'd feel guilty just ignoring them, and thus you let them drain you of all your positivity while feeling more negative because you're feeling guilty for thinking about ditching them?  That's an energy vampire.
I took a course on the occult and learned a bit about Satanism and LaVey.  From what I have learned, Satanism seems to be mostly about letting go of all of your obligations to be and their obligations to you.  A big *$&( off to all of the people who you'd rather not bother with.  I don't, and I'm not sure if LaVey ever thought that 'energy vampires' were paranormal things so much us every day people who are just drags.  Then again, I also think a lot of the stuff that Aleister Crowley and the other occult authors wrote was a little tongue in cheek and more practical than paranormal.
